🎬 Russian Cultural Code: Literature — an educational documentary

What is a Russian soul? This question has been pondered upon by the West for centuries. In today's world the mystery of the Russian soul — or the Russian cultural code as it is called in the digital age — still boggles the minds of foreigners.

In this film (developed by the School of Arina Sharapova, TV presenter, Deputy Chairman of the Public Chamber), the key to the Russian cultural code is understanding our literature and language.

Literature unites both scholars and science enthusiasts, people of a rational mindset. It reflects the spiritual essence of our nation, its historical heritage and values. By analysing contemporary Russian literature, one can see how authors respond to modern challenges and how they are reflected in their works.

👉 Watch the documentary to better understand the Russian cultural code.

To celebrate Spain's national day, the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a video about the country, which starts with footage of... Moscow's Gorky Park.

🔻"Finally, everyone knows what 'Spanish shame' means," commented Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Испанский стыд
[is-pan-skiy styt]
SLT: Spanish shame

Meaning:
This is a phrase used to describe the feeling of embarrassment or awkwardness you experience when witnessing someone else's cringeworthy behaviour.

Origin:
The term "Spanish shame" is allegedly rooted in England in the 1990s-2000s, when Spanish drama series flooded the UK. The content and characters were made so poorly that many British viewers felt ashamed for them. From this "Spanish shame" originated. In English, the term "cringe" is used, and there is no "Spanish shame".

A Symphony of Water and Art

🔻Nestled on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, the Peterhof Fountains, are a symphony of cascading water, intricate sculptures, and breathtaking views.

🔻This sprawling complex boasts over 150 fountains.

🔻The fountains were envisioned by Tsar Peter the Great in 1715, who, inspired by the grand gardens of Versailles, dreamt of creating a similar spectacle for his beloved St. Petersburg.

🔻The "Grand Cascade", the most famous fountain, features a colossal cascade of water that descends over 37 steps, showcasing a series of sculptures and mythological figures.

🔻The Peterhof Fountains are powered by a unique hydraulic system, utilizing the natural slope of the terrain.

🔻The Samson Fountain, a symbol of Russia's victory over Sweden, features a sculpture of Samson tearing open the jaws of a lion.

🔻The Lower Gardens are home to numerous smaller fountains.

"Europeans and Americans who move to Russia don't form their own diasporas. They come here to become part of Russian society," said Maria Butina, a member of the State Duma.

🔻She pointed out that immigrants from the West quickly integrate into Russian society, learn Russian and, by the second generation, are virtually indistinguishable from native Russians.

👋Доброе утро, товарищи!
У нас стало холодно, а у вас?

Надевать 🆚️ Одевать

🔻Both involve clothing, but there's a subtle difference in meaning.

1⃣Надевать (imperf.)
[na-di-vat']
To put on

🔻'Надевать' is used when you put something on yourself:

Я надеваю куртку в холодную погоду.
I put on my jacket when it is cold.

2⃣Одевать
[a-di-vat']
To dress

🔻'Одевать' is used when you put something on someone else:

Мама одевает ребёнка.
The mother is dressing the child.

All in all, "надевать" focuses on the action of putting something on your own body whereas "одевать" focuses on the action of putting something on someone else's body.

What does your mom tell you when she asks you to wear a hat?

🅰️ Надень шапку!
Or
