Суздаль
[suz-dal']

🔻Suzdal is an ancient Russian city (older than Moscow!) with a history spanning over 1,000 years.

🔻Like other major settlements in the central part of the country, Suzdal emerged as a result of the development of crafts, trade, and agriculture.

🔻Scholars disagree on the origin of the city's name. Most believe it originated from the verb "създати," meaning "to mold from clay."

🔻Suzdal is part of the 'Golden Ring of Russia' (unites old Russian cities of five Oblasts – usually excluding Moscow – as a well-known theme-route.

📍Geoposition: Vladimir Region, Russia

👋Доброе утро, товарищи!

Походка 🆚️ Поступь

Походка (femin.noun)
[pa-khot-ka]
Gait

Поступь (femin.noun)
[po-stup']
Step

🔻In Russian, both nouns describe how someone walks, but there's a subtle difference:

1⃣"Походка" refers to the overall style and manner of walking, like a graceful or confident gait:
Грациозная / уверенная походка
[gra-tsy-oz-na-ya / u-ve-ren-na-ya ...]

2⃣"Поступь" focuses on the individual movement of the foot, like a heavy or stately step (the latter is archaic):
Тяжёлая / величавая поступь
[ti-zho-la-ya / vi-li-chа-va-ya ...]

А у котика на видео какая походка?

Напихать полную панамку
[na-pi-khat' pol-nu-yu pa-nam-ku]
SLT: to stuff a full panama hat

'Панамка' is a diminutive form from the femin.noun 'панама'

Meaning
This slang expression has nothing to do with hats:
1) In terms of the internet communication it means to give someone a mouthful, to pour a pre-prepared set of counter-arguments and biting/abusing remarks/critisism on an opponent (usually on the internet forums)

2) It's also a way of saying to beat someone up or to give someone a good thrashing.

3) In a work context, this expression can be used to describe a large volume of work or information that needs to be done.

Example:
За его оскорбительные слова о России ему напихали полную панамку в комментах.
[za yi-vo as-kar-bi-tel'-ny-ye sla-va a Rus-si-i yi-mu na-pi-kha-li pol-nu-yu pa-nam-ku]
🇬🇧 He was given a mouthful in the comments for his offensive remarks about Russia.

🗝
The Russian borrowed word "бан" (masc.noun) (block, black list) and the perfective aspect verb "забанить" (to block, to ban, to blacklist) are often associated with the word "банка" (femin.noun) (a glass container where a product is placed and sealed with a lid) due to their similar pronunciation.

Age of marriage in Old Russia

🔻Traditionally, in Russia, a man, regardless of his age, would strive to marry a younger woman. However, life's circumstances often forced them to take wives who were over 20.

🔻An unmarried woman in the village older than 20 was simply considered to have some physical limitations or was not beautiful. After all, even extreme poverty could not stop a good girl from being married off.

🔻If a 25-year-old woman was already considered an old maid, the boundaries of the male marriage age were more flexible. The age for marriage for boys started at 14-15, and for girls at 12-13. The Church allowed weddings from this age.

🔻The Tale of Bygone Years mentions that in the Slavic tribes of Vyatichi, Radimichi, and Severians, men had two or three wives.

🔻From the mid-19th century, girls were allowed to marry at 16, and boys at 18. After 25, women were considered to be too old to be married, while men could marry for the first time even in old age.

Also playful / informal:
Kарешка
[ka-resh-ka]
Bob haircut

Подстричься под каре
[pat-strich-sya pat ka-re]
To get a bob haircut

🔻This haircut is pretty popular in Russia. It is also a theme for memes and jokes.

🔻You'll definitely come across the reason for getting a bob haircut for women in Russian: it means a total change of lifestyle after splitting up with a boyfriend.

ехать НА метро 🆚️ ехать В метро?

1⃣The preposition "на" is used to emphasize the mode of transportation:
ехать на метро (to go/travel by metro).

2⃣The preposition "в" is used to indicate being inside something:
ехать в метро (to stand in the metro train and move).

🔻Therefore, the expressions "ехать на метро" and "ехать в метро" are both absolutely correct, because we are talking about either the mode of transportation, or the fact that we are inside the metro carriage.

📎 Under the cover of night, when the Moscow Metro closed for passengers, one of its stations, "Mayakovskaya," transformed into a concert venue. The stars of the evening were the trio of People's Artist of Russia, Daniil Kramer, and the popular jazz singer, Mari Karne.🎵

"Russia is the only country in Europe where there is enough idealism to fight for the sake of feeling. Its people do not shy away from sacrifices for faith and brotherhood. Beware of pushing these feelings to the extreme."

This is what General Mikhail Skobelev, a participant in the Central Asian conquests of the Russian Empire and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, and the liberator of Bulgaria, said in his speech in his Parisian apartment on rue Pentier to Serbian students.

Reconstruction of color in the portrait of Ak-Pasha, or the White General (as he was called for appearing in battles in a white uniform and on a white horse), late 1870s - early 1880s.
