• Сосать лапу (imperfective)
  [sa-sat' la-pu]
SLT: To suck (your own) paw

🔻This literal meaning is also actual in terms of bears which hibernate throughout the winter.

🔻However, this phraseological unit 'сосать лапу' also means to experience need, а lack of material resources. The issue is not necessarily about a lack of food, but rather about a lack of money.

Origin:
Most likely, the phraseological unit arose from the observations of hunters who saw bears in hibernation, which curled up and buried their faces in their paws.

Example:
Если мы сейчас съездим в отпуск, то потом в течение пары месяцев будем сосать лапу.
[yes-li my siy-chas s"yez-dim v ot-pusk, to pa-tom f ti-che-niyi pa-ry me-syi-tsev bu-dim sa-sat' la-pu]
🇬🇧 If we go on vacation now, then we will be short of money for a couple of months.

These photos were taken at the end of 19th century and now are kept in the collection of the Russian Museum of Ethnography.

🔻The women in the photos are wearing traditional costumes of different regions of Russia.

🔻There are two similar basic elements - sarafan and kokoshnik.

Сарафан
  [sa-ra-phan]

🔻Sarafan is a sleeveless, high-waisted dress either cut on the bias or gored to give fullness at the hem. A chemise is needed to be worn underneath.

🔻The sarafan could be very rich looking, trimmed with lace, ribbon or gold braid, or very homemade looking.

🔻Over the sarafan a short jacket could be worn, gored and gathered at the back, and also an embroidered apron. Sometimes the sarafan was worn with a belt.

🔻You can also read about kokoshniks ➡️ here.

🔻The most beautiful space woman in our country, Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, Hero of the Soviet Union, Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR, turns 87 today!

🔻Valentina Vladimirovna made one space flight with a duration of staying in space for 2 days 22 hours 50 minutes.

🔻She remains the only woman in the world who has completed a stellar voyage alone.

🔻Tereshkova made the world's first flight of a female cosmonaut - on June 16, 1963 on the Vostok-6 spacecraft. The launch took place at Baikonur.

🔻At the same time, the Vostok-5 spacecraft, piloted by cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky, was in orbit.

🔻On the day of her flight into space, Tereshkova told her family that she was leaving for a parachute competition; they learned about the flight from the news on the radio.

📎 There are also stamps devoted to Valentina Tereshkova and her flight (see photos by our subscriber in the chat)
