Indian Union Muslim League moves SC seeking stay of CAA Rules

A day after the Union government issued the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, or CAA, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday demanding that the impugned statute and regulations be stayed, and that no coercive steps be taken against persons belonging to Muslim community who have been deprived of the benefit of this law.

The application by the Kerala-based political party claimed that the CAA Rules notified on Monday evening creates a “highly truncated and fast-tracked process” for the grant of citizenships to non-Muslim migrants from the specified countries, thereby making operational a “manifestly arbitrary and discriminatory” regime solely on the ground of religious identity.

BJP redeemed bonds worth ₹6061 crore followed by TMC

The Election Commission of India complied with the Supreme Court's directives on Thursday by uploading the electoral bonds data provided by the State Bank of India (SBI) onto its website. The data is divided into two parts: the first, spanning 337 pages, includes information about the entities purchasing the electoral bonds along with the purchase dates; the second, comprising 426 pages, details the political parties, dates, and amounts involved.

Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG)

In a significant step towards preparing for the future of warfare, the Indian Army has established the “Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group” (STEAG), a first-of-its-kind specialised technology unit. The primary objective of STEAG is to conduct research and evaluation of cutting-edge communication technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G and 6G networks, machine learning, and quantum technologies for defence applications.

The creation of STEAG aligns with the Indian armed forces’ realisation of the need to equip themselves with next-generation fighting capabilities. In 2023, the Army decided to operationalise command cyber operations and support wings (CCOSW) for cyberwarfare, demonstrating their commitment to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving technological landscape of modern warfare.

Over 600 lawyers write to CJI raising alarm on threats to the judiciary's integrity

More than 600 lawyers including senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra from across India have written to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressing concern over what they perceive as a threat to the judiciary's integrity. The lawyers condemned the "vested interest group" attempting to manipulate judicial processes influence court decisions and tarnish the reputation of the judiciary with baseless allegations and political agendas.

One of the alarming tactics mentioned in the letter is the alleged fabrication of false narratives aimed at portraying a skewed view of the judiciary's functioning, with comparisons to a purported 'golden age' of the courts. Such narratives, the lawyers asserted, are intended to influence judicial outcomes and erode public trust in the judiciary.

The lawyers called upon the Supreme Court to take firm measures to protect the judiciary.

Satellite-Based Toll Collection System in India

Recently, Union Minister of Roads, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced plans to introduce a satellite-based toll collection system for the country’s highways. This innovative system aims to charge tolls based on the distance travelled by vehicles, directly deducting the amount from users’ bank accounts. The move is expected to reduce toll taxes, streamline journeys, and improve the overall efficiency of India’s highway infrastructure.

The proposed system will utilize the global navigation satellite system, including India’s own GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) satellite navigation system, which has an accuracy of approximately 10 meters. An On-Board Unit (OBU) will be installed in vehicles to facilitate accurate mapping and toll calculation.
