Lebanese Protests

Civil protests are taking place in Lebanon, initially triggered by planned taxes on gasoline, tobacco and VoIP calls on applications such as WhatsApp,but quickly expanding into a country-wide condemnation of sectarian rule,stagnant economy, unemployment, endemic corruption in the public sector, legislation that is perceived to shield the ruling class from accountability (such as banking secrecy) and failures of the government to provide basic services such as electricity, water and sanitation. The protests first erupted on 17 October 2019. It has been 144 days since they have started.As a result of the protests, Lebanon entered a political crisis, with Prime Minister Saad Hariri tendering his resignation and echoing protesters' demands for a government of independent specialists.Other politicians targeted by the protests have remained in power. On 19 December 2019, former Minister of Education Hassan Diab was designated the next prime minister and tasked with forming a new cabinet.

Protests and acts of civil disobedience have since continued, with protesters denouncing and condemning the designation of Diab as prime minister.On 22 January, Lebanon named Hassan Diab as its prime minister to lead the new cabinet of 20 members, after three months of mass protests. Diab was appointed with the support of Hezbollah, its allies, and the Free Patriotic Movement led by Gebran Bassil.

‘basic structure’ of the Constitution.

• The Court by a majority of 4 to 1 struck down clauses (4)
and (5) of article 368 holding that they violated the basic
structure of the Constitution.

• The Court ruled that Parliament’s power to make
Constitutional amendments is limited which itself is a
basic feature of the Constitution. The judgement makes it clear that the Constitution, and not the Parliament is supreme.

April 13, 1919, marked a turning point in the Indian freedom struggle. It was Baisakhi that day, a harvest festival popular in Punjab and parts of north India. Local residents in Amritsar decided to hold a meeting that day to discuss and protest against the confinement of Satya Pal and Saifuddin Kitchlew, two leaders fighting for Independence, and implementation of the Rowlatt Act, which armed the British government with powers to detain any person without trial.

The crowd had a mix of men, women and children. They all gathered in a park called the Jallianwala Bagh, walled on all sides but for a few small gates, against the orders of the British. The protest was a peaceful one, and the gathering included pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple who were merely passing through the park, and some who had not come to protest.

While the meeting was on, Brigadier-General Reginald Edward Harry Dyer, who had crept up to the scene wanting to teach the public assembled a lesson, ordered 90 soldiers he had brought with

him to the venue to open fire on the crowd. Many tried in vain to scale the walls to escape. Many jumped into the well located inside the park.

Outcomes:

Considered ‘The Butcher of Amritsar’in the aftermath of the massacre, General Dyer was removed from command and exiled to Britain.

Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, as a sign of condemnation, renounced their British Knighthood and Kaiser-i-Hind medal respectively.
