Hi there!👋🏻
This is a channel devoted to topics in Language, Technology, and Mind.
These three are deeply intertwined - think of natural language processing (speech recognition, text mining, and so on); cognitive science; psycholinguistics; artificial intelligence, and many more.
Here you'll see:
🔸reviews of interesting articles & literature;
🔸original interviews with academics and people from the industry;
🔸curious concepts and facts;
🔸recommendations with podcasts, blogs, and so on.

🔸обзоры на статьи и тематическую литературу;
🔸оригинальные интервью с профессорами и людьми из индустрии;
🔸любопытные концепты и факты;

The first interview has arrived!
Maciej - the hero of the interview - is doing Ph.D. at the University of Warsaw, where he teaches philosophy of language. He also gives debate and philosophy classes to high school students.
In Maciej's background are years of studying cognitive science, mathematics, and various fields of philosophy.
We met in the university canteen and recorded the interview to the accompaniment of cyberpunk sounds of vending machines.
What is primary - language or mind? Why paradoxes surround our lives and how do they advance science? How philosophy is connected to state-of-the-art technologies?
Answers to these and more you can find in the article :)
P.S. I recommend to open it in the browser - the font is more enjoyable there.

Language and Mind, Epistemic Paradoxes, and How Philosophy Brought Us Computers
My name is Maciej Tarnowski, I’m a Ph.D. student at the University of Warsaw, and my main focus is in Philosophy of Mind, Logic, and Philosophy of Language. Previously I also studied Philosophy, Mathematics, and Cognitive Science for 5 years. I. Philosophy…
I discovered that the link to the interview with Maciej doesn't work properly in a computer version — so here's the link to the same article on Medium.
After a period of silence, finally feeling ready to post some exciting interviews from winter + deliver more new content.

Maciej Tarnowski on language and mind, epistemic paradoxes, and how philosophy brought us computers
I first got to know Maciej as a debater who succeeded at competitions consistently enough to notice. Later I learned that he was a Ph.D…
In January, I planned a short trip to Saarbrücken to check out the city and talk to professors from Saarland University.
Vera Demberg was one of the people I eagerly wanted to meet. During her short break between work calls, we managed to discuss some exciting topics:
🔹How do people choose what they are going to say?
🔹Are NLP trends facing a deadlock?
🔹What do humans know about the language that machines still don’t?
Read about these and more in the new article :)

“There is a lot more to understand than what is literally said”: Vera Demberg on Surprisal theory, discourse, and NLP trends
Vera Demberg is a Professor of Computer Science and Computational Linguistics at the Department of Computer Science of Saarland University…
Have you ever wondered how the advancement of technology affects our interaction with it?
That's exactly what Iona Gessinger studies. She has gone a long path from a linguist in Romance Languages to a researcher in human-computer interaction. She did research in Germany, France, Brazil, and Ireland.
Out of many possible topics, we discussed the following:
🔸How linguists can be helpful in crime investigation?
🔸Do we really treat machines way differently than humans?
🔸What voice assistants and robots should be like?

Connecting humans and machines: Iona Gessinger on human-computer interaction, forensic phonetics, and career path

Badr M. Abdullah is a Ph.D. researcher in human speech processing at Saarland University.
As he put in his bio, he conducts "interdisciplinary research at the intersection of linguistics, speech science, cognitive science, and machine learning".
When I was in Saarbrücken, I couldn't not ask him for an interview. We met in the university canteen (Mensa) at lunch and discussed Badr's career, research interests, and other exciting topics.
🔹How do humans process speech?
🔹Is AI still far from us in perceiving the spoken language?
🔹How do Machine Learning and Cognitive Science interact with Speech Science?
Answers to these and more are already in the article :)

Speech processing: Badr Abdullah on the invisible filter, computational models, and the mystery of understanding the Language
Back in January, I arrived in Saarbrücken to visit the University of Saarland (as it turned out later, my future Alma Mater) and talk to…
Since this channel featured 3 (!) interviews with professors at Saarland University (where I study now), I decided it would be fair to share a bit more about university life and the city itself.
Today I caught some inspiration and wrote about 5 things that caused some.. cultural shock, I guess? - when I moved to Saarbrücken.
I didn't capture everything, of course, as there's a limit to human patience when reading a text. Hopefully, next time I will shed light on some other nuances, including more positive ones :)
