Taken sixty years ago today as I was heading off to university, this photo features the suit that my parents bought me for the time ahead. This was the only time I ever wore it. And it was the only suit I've ever had πŸ™‚

We arrived in Shanghai yesterday (after a very tiring trip). Our first supper was delicious takeout: Qingshuan specialty fried rice and Tengzhou vegetable pancake purchased at two different establishments just up the street from our digs.

This is not a wine culture. And yes ... Steve will be drinking that beer.

On our way to Beijing. It's incredible how smooth this train is considering how fast we're going!

Today's lunch. The fish was yellow croaker. The shrimp were on a bed of rice noodles. All of it was very tasty. Total cost (including a beer and an order of rice): $22.

And tonight's takeaway supper (hot noodle salad plus an egg/lettuce pancake) from Brother Zhang's cost a whopping $4.76 ... we couldn't eat all of it.

Today's tourist event was lunch at a restaurant which specializes in Peking duck. Here are a few photos of the experience: the chef carving our half duck, the resulting plate of duck with crispy skin, the condiments for it (garlic paste, salt, hoisin sauce, thin strips of cucumber, and chopped scallions), and one of the thin pancakes with all of the above ready to roll up and be eaten. We also had an amazing arugula salad with strips of bean curd and a sesame oil dressing. We are stuffed.

On our way back to our room after picking up a very light supper from next door this food delivery robot was waiting at the elevator. Followed us in and got off several floors before we did.

This is the view from our hotel room in Beijing. The CITIC tower is the tallest building in the city.

The mountains in the background are the Jundu Mountains (part of the Yan range). Some of the most famous sections of the Great Wall run along the ridges of the Jundu.

Today took us to Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace). To get a better view requires ordering tickets in advance and then queuing for some time (not our strong suit).

The two slogans flanking the portrait of Mao Zedong are δΈεŽδΊΊζ°‘ε…±ε’Œε›½δΈ‡ε² (Long Live the People's Republic of China) on the left, and δΈ–η•ŒδΊΊζ°‘ε€§ε›’η»“δΈ‡ε² (Long Live the Great Unity of the World's Peoples) on the right.

The whole area was extremely busy and very impressive.
