After the Liberation of France in 1944, thousands of women accused of having relationships with german soldiers were publicly humiliated during a period known as the épuration sauvage (“wild purge”).

Many had their heads forcibly shaved and were paraded through the streets before cheering crowds. Some had indeed maintained romantic relationships with members of the occupying forces, while others were punished based on rumors, accusations, or minor forms of collaboration.

These public acts of revenge often took place without formal trials and became one of the darkest chapters of france’s liberation after world war ii. Today, historians view these events as a complex story of justice, revenge, and the hardships faced by civilians during and after the war.
