If you wish to truly understand the reasons for resistance to the #GreatNicobarProject, do watch @LtGenAjai, who as Commander-in-Chief @AN_Command knows far more about the project than political warriors, explain the hypocrisy behind the protests.

Replying to @MayankNSingh @LtGenAjai @AN_Command @RahulGandhi @INCIndia @adgpi @BJP4India @MEAIndia @NetramDefence @PMOIndia @DefenceMinIndia A very valid counter point.

Sorry but a bit incorrect... the core requirement with any transshipment port is the need to be closest to the International Sea Lanes (ISL) so that containers can be shipped fastest to the final customer. All successful and established transshipment ports viz Hamburg, Colombo, Singapore as examples, almost lie on the ISL. GNI also meets this criterion. However, too close to established ports of Singapore and Colombo. Now, second criterion kicks in- back end connectivity to hinterland/mainland ports to keep delays minimal? Where is our coastal shipping? Nhq has all these years since days of Adm Vishnu Bhagwat as CNS (maybe even earlier but I read his papers first hand) had been pleading with GoI to consider shipping and its ecosystem (build and repairs) as core national interest. Policy has now, finally, been issued but coastal shipping will not emerge overnight. Absence of back end connectivity will discourage container carriers from shifting to GNI from Colombo (now being expanded too) and Singapore. Vizhinjam suffered because of distance from east- west ISL and delays in port to clear containers, as illustration. GNI project less transshipment (replace with world class tourism infrastructure along entire A and N, not limited to GNI) may make better commercial sense. Mil and other infra can all come up but viability of TSH at GNI (with its ecological and environmental damages) as a commercial entity is suspect. Expand existing naval and air bases for which TSH is not a must. Saying this is not anti-national and I am politically neutral. Alt pov...
