The bar chart compares the percentages of five types of magazines sold by a particular company in 1975, 1995 and 2015. Overall, sports magazines remained the best-selling category throughout the period. By contrast, sales of health and, especially, fashion magazines declined considerably, whereas those of food and other magazines were unchanged overall despite peaking in 1995. Notably, fashion had become the least popular category by 2015.

Sports magazines consistently accounted for the largest share of total sales, rising steadily from about 32% in 1975 to 36% in 1995 before reaching a chart high of just over 40% by 2015. Meanwhile, the figures for the food and "others" categories followed similar patterns, with the former more than doubling to 22% in 1995 before falling back to its initial level of 10% in 2015, while the latter peaked at 32% before returning/reverting to 26%.

By contrast, both health and fashion magazines followed downward trends. The figure for the former fell from 26% in 1975 to 20 % in 1995 before levelling off, whereas fashion magazines experienced a much steeper decline, dropping from 23% to a low of just 5% by the end of the period.

The bar chart illustrates the number of items borrowed from public libraries in the UK between 1995 and 2005, across four different categories. Overall, borrowing of top audio-visual materials more than doubled over the period, whereas the other three categories experienced an overall decline, with adult non-fiction recording the most dramatic fall. Adult non-fiction was initially the most popular category, but it was overtaken by adult fiction from 2000 onwards.

Turning to the two adult reading categories, both recorded declines, although the fall in adult non-fiction was by far the more dramatic. Starting at 1,113 million in 1995, the figure dipped steeply to 161 million in 2000 before falling further to 110 million by the end of the period. Similarly, borrowing of adult fiction declined steadily, dropping by 50 million in each five-year period, from 330 million in 1995 to 230 million in 2005. Nevertheless, adult fiction surpassed adult non-fiction in 2000 to become the most borrowed category.

By contrast, the remaining two categories followed different patterns. Borrowing of top audio-visual materials, which stood at just 28 million at the outset, rose slightly to 33 million in 2000 before more than doubling to 60 million by the end of the period. Despite this substantial increase, it remained the least borrowed category throughout. Meanwhile, the figure for children’s books increased modestly from 107 million to 114 million before plunging to 104 million in the final year.
