Christians, guard you mind by focusing on:

• Things that please God

Jesus didn't hangout with sinners because he affirmed and celebrated their lifestyles.

He spent time with sinners to show them their need for a Savior, and to teach them a different way of living.

Christians must avoid these manners of speech:

• Speaking lies or "half-truths"
• Sharing gossip about others
• Complaining about your hard times
• Using coarse/dirty jokes

September 14: Going Your Own Way

Jonah 1:1–4:11; Acts 13:1–12; Job 22:1–13

I work hard to make my disobedience socially acceptable: “I have a stubborn streak,” I explain, or “I’m just like my dad.” But the truth is that my weaknesses aren’t cute or transitory—and they’re not anyone else’s fault. Instead, my disobedience is a deep-rooted, rebellious tendency to follow my own path when I should be humbling myself, seeking wisdom, or obeying leaders who know better.

The book of Jonah illustrates these opposing responses to God’s will. We can easily identify with Jonah’s stubborn character. When God tells Jonah to warn Nineveh of its coming judgment, Jonah not only disobeys, but he sets off in the opposite direction. As Jonah’s story progresses, however, we see God orchestrate a reversal. In His incredible mercy, He breaks Jonah’s stubborn streak and replaces it with humility. God also has mercy on the Ninevites—a “people who do not know right from left”—and they repent in sackcloth and ashes (Jonah 4:11).

It’s easy to diminish or rationalize our persistent faults. Yet when we’re faced with circumstances or people who hold up a mirror and show us who we truly are, we have the opportunity to change. God is molding us into people who want to follow His will, and He’ll provide opportunities to shape us to that end. We just have to respond to His calling.

September 14 - The Correct Response of Souls Seeking Jesus

“Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ They said to Him, ‘Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come, and you will see.’ So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour” (John 1:38–39).

As Andrew and John walked after Him, “Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, ‘What do you seek?’” He already knew what the two wanted. The Lord asked the question to challenge them to consider their motives. He did not ask them who they were seeking, but what they were seeking.

By asking “Where are You staying?” Andrew and John were not just asking where He was staying; they were courteously requesting an extended private interview with Him. The question also signaled their willingness to become His disciples.

Jesus’ immediate response, “Come, and you will see,” was the invitation Andrew and John were hoping for. Jesus knew their hearts, that they were honest, sincere seekers.

John does not record what they discussed that memorable evening, but the Lord undoubtedly “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45). Whatever He said was enough to persuade them that He was indeed Israel’s Messiah, as Andrew’s excited testimony to his brother Peter the next day indicates (John 4:40–41).

In your service to Christ, be sure your motives are pure. Otherwise the Lord will know.

Ask Yourself

“What do you seek?” is a good question for us to ask ourselves as we approach the Lord, challenging our motives. What would you say you are seeking Him for? And if you’re not finding it, is it because you’re seeking amiss or for the wrong reasons—or perhaps seeking something God knows you don’t need?

God really wants us to be aware of his meticulous sovereignty.

“You ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’” James 4:15

It's incredibly important to take our children to Church on Sundays.

And, it's even more important that our kids see us live out on Monday through Saturday what we said we believe on Sunday.

WEEK 3 — Fruitfulness & Fulfillment (Sep 14–20)
September 14 (Monday)

Dear Daughter,

Fruit does not strain to grow — it simply stays attached, and growth happens as a result, not a striving.
This week, stop trying so hard to produce a good marriage. Abide. Fruit is the byproduct of connection, not effort alone.
Strain less. Attach more.
'He who abides in me… bears much fruit' (John 15:5).
