September 5: I Loved You; I Love You Now

Hosea 11:1–12:14; Acts 5:1–42; Job 16:10–22
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son” (Hos 11:1). This line is beautiful if read alone, but it is sad when read in context: “When I called them, they went from my face. They sacrificed to the Baals, and they sacrificed to idols” (Hos 11:2). It’s incredible how quickly we forget God’s mercy and provision. All too soon we return to putting our desires before His.
When we put things in front of God’s will—false gods and our own misguided ways (Baals and idols)—we thwart His will not only for our lives, but also for the lives of others. For each of us, God has a tremendous plan that also affects others, for His glory and for the betterment of the world. When we fail to seek His will, we neglect our faith and operate by our own agenda, setting His work aside.
Our missteps can have terribly painful consequences: “The sword rages in [my people’s] cities; it consumes [their] false prophets and devours because of their plans. My people are bent on backsliding from me. To the Most High they call, he does not raise them at all” (Hos 11:6–7).
We endanger ourselves when we backslide. Sin tears at our very souls. Yet God is loving. Unlike us, He doesn’t act out of vengeance but out of His perfect will: “I will not execute my fierce anger, I will not again destroy Ephraim; because I am God and not a mortal, the Holy One in your midst; and I will not come in wrath. They will go after Yahweh; he roars like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the sea” (Hos 11:9–10).
God’s goodness is not an excuse for our poor behavior; it’s the reason to run back to Him—our great lion. Let’s let Him roar against the darkness that seeks to capture our desires and our hearts. Let’s let Him push back. Let’s call upon Yahweh.

September 5 - Prayer for Harvest Workers

“‘Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest’” (Matthew 9:38).
“The Lord of the harvest” is a title of God that represents His role as the Judge of the unsaved—those who will stand before Him in the last day and be condemned to hell. We are to plead for Him to send workers who will lovingly warn them so they may be a part of those harvested to eternal glory.
The Christian’s first responsibility is not to go and start working as soon as he sees a need but to come to the Lord in prayer. Waiting on the Lord is a crucial part of serving Him. Before the disciples received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost they were not prepared to witness for Christ, and He therefore instructed them “not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which,’ He said, ‘you heard of from Me’” (Acts 1:4).
It is possible to pray regularly for the salvation of a loved one, a neighbor, a friend, or a fellow employee and then to let our concern stop with our prayer. But when we earnestly pray for the Lord to send someone to those unsaved people, we can’t help becoming open to being that someone ourselves. It is possible to pray for someone’s salvation while keeping them at arm’s length. But when we sincerely beg the Lord to send someone to witness to them, we place ourselves at His disposal to become one of His “workers” in that ministry. Be prepared to take on that role.
Ask Yourself
Who among your family, your friends, or the associates among whom you’re thrust each day is in need of Christ’s saving touch? Name them in prayer today . . . and at every remembrance of them. And pray that the Lord would send someone His Spirit can use to bring conviction to their souls, even if that someone is you.

"The Threshing Floor: Where Wheat Becomes Bread"
Before wheat becomes bread, it must first be BEATEN. Not to destroy it — to free it. The threshing floor is a violent-looking mercy: stalks are struck again and again until the grain finally separates from the husk that never could have fed anyone. Ruth found her redeemer at a threshing floor, not a palace (Ruth 3:2-3). Take note — some of God's sweetest appointments are scheduled in the places that look like struggle. 🌾⚒️
Here is the deeper riddle folded inside the grain: the husk clings tightly, looks like part of the wheat, even protects it for a season — but it was never meant to stay. Some things your marriage carries look protective now — pride wearing the mask of "boundaries," silence wearing the mask of "peace" — but they are husk, not grain. They must be beaten loose before the bread can rise. 🔥
And after the threshing comes the winnowing — the wind that carries away everything that was never meant to nourish, leaving only what can become the Bread of your household, the sustenance that feeds your children's children. Ps 1:3 says the fruitful tree is planted BY the water, but scripture never promises it skips the wind. 🌬️
