Never give up! The nerdy explanation 🤓

There is a particularly nasty kind of conflict where someone doesn’t simply misunderstand another person.

They misunderstand them, react to their own misunderstanding, and then use that misunderstanding as permission to tear the other person apart.
It can begin with something incredibly simple.
“I thought you wanted me to do this.”

Except instead of checking whether that assumption is correct, it rapidly becomes:
“You wanted me to do this.”
“You expected this from me.”
“You made me do this.”
“You caused this.”

And before the other person has even had a chance to understand what is happening, they are being attacked for something they never actually asked for.
But then comes the uglier part.

The person doesn’t stop at the supposed behaviour.
They go after character.
They become hostile.
They throw nasty descriptions around.
They assign motives that were never there.

They tell the other person what they supposedly think, what they supposedly wanted, why they supposedly behaved that way and, eventually, what kind of person they supposedly are.
A misunderstanding becomes an excuse for character assassination.

And when the person being attacked says:
“That isn’t what happened.”
“I never asked you to do that.”
“That wasn’t my intention.”
“You are completely misrepresenting me.”

The response isn’t curiosity.
It isn’t, “Maybe I misunderstood.”
It is more hostility.
More accusations.
More certainty.

They effectively say:
“No. I know what you meant.”
“I know what you wanted.”
“I know what you’re like.”
Think about the arrogance contained in that.

Someone becomes angry over their own interpretation of an interaction and then appoints themselves the ultimate authority on another human being’s personality.
They don’t merely attack what happened.
They attack who the person is.

And suddenly the person on the receiving end is expected to defend their entire character against a fictional version of themselves constructed during somebody else’s emotional outburst.

That is not normal conflict resolution.
Healthy conflict sounds like:
“I thought you were asking me to do something immediately and it overwhelmed me.”

Then the other person can respond:
“No, that wasn’t what I meant.”
And the misunderstanding can be resolved.
But when someone would rather attack, insult and define another person than entertain the possibility that their original perception was wrong, the conflict has stopped being about understanding.

It has become about making somebody else the villain.
There is also something deeply convenient about transferring responsibility this way.

“I chose to do something because I misunderstood you” becomes “You made me do it.”
“I became distracted” becomes “You distracted me.”
“I became furious” becomes “You made me furious.”
“I lost control of how I spoke to you” becomes “Your personality is the reason I spoke to you that way.”

Suddenly their choices disappear and somebody else’s supposed character becomes responsible for everything.
And perhaps the nastiest part is expecting the person who has just been verbally torn apart to accept the description.

As though being shouted at with enough certainty somehow makes an accusation true.
As though another person’s anger grants them access to somebody else’s mind.
As though cruelty becomes insight simply because it is delivered confidently.
It doesn’t.

People are entitled to say:
“You upset me.”
“I misunderstood you.”
“I felt pressured.”
“I’m angry.”
They are even entitled to walk away.
But nobody is entitled to take their own misunderstanding, turn it into fact, unleash their frustration onto another person, attack their character, invent their motives and then demand that the person accept:
“This is who you are.” No.

That is who you have decided they are. There is a difference.

And sometimes the most revealing part of an ugly interaction is watching someone become so committed to their version of another human being that they would rather destroy that person’s character than consider one uncomfortable possibility:

They might simply have been wrong.

Those are words.
Behaviour is data.

And sometimes the most uncomfortable discovery isn’t that people hated the lighthouse.
It’s that they loved the light.
There is a difference.
One values the person.
The other values what the person provides.

The distinction can remain invisible for years because highly capable people often continue contributing long after reciprocity has disappeared.

They assume that giving more will eventually produce balance.
More understanding.
More forgiveness.
More work.
More ideas.
More patience.
Another chance.
And another.

Until something seemingly small happens that isn’t actually small at all.
It is simply the final data point required for the pattern to become visible.
Then there is no dramatic revelation.
Just clarity.

The lighthouse looks at the ocean and realises: “I have spent years illuminating everybody else’s journey while neglecting my own.”

So the light doesn’t disappear.
It turns around.
And illuminates somewhere new.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You with open hands and heavy hearts. Look upon those who have wandered into wickedness, into delusions that feel like truth, into ill intent that has left real wounds in other people’s lives. They have harmed, they have deceived themselves and others, they have chosen paths that pull them farther from You.
Yet You already know the cry of Jesus from the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” So we ask You now turn them. Soften what has grown hard. Pierce the fog of their delusions with Your light. Take the energy they have spent on harm and redirect it toward You, toward goodness, toward the simple, holy work of helping one another.
Draw them home. Let them see the faces they have hurt and the faces they can still lift. Replace bitterness with mercy, pride with humility, isolation with the courage to love. Make them instruments of the very healing they once delayed.
We trust that no heart is too far for You, and no night is too dark for Your dawn. In God we trust.
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Ephesians 5:14

To be frank, many are not ready for the answer they seek until they are willing to live the truth it requires.

Truth. Love. Service to others. That is the operating doctrine. The only one.

Until we awaken to that and live it, the cycle continues. Not talk about it. Not post about it. Live it.

'Cause I said so.

The Armor of God
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasionswith all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Final Greetings
Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
