Moving your site to a new domain is a bit like a house move. The stuff you forget to redirect is the stuff you'll be hunting for months later.

The part that's easy to skip: telling search engines where everything went. Without redirects mapping old pages to new ones, users and search engines keep landing on the old URLs, hit nothing, and gradually stop coming back, taking years of built-up traffic with them.

The redirects need to be ready and switched on by the time you launch.

Ever moved a site and watched the traffic dip before it climbed back?

A 301 redirect is a change-of-address card for the internet. It tells browsers and search engines "this page moved, here's where it lives now," and carries most of the old page's reputation across too.

Skip it, and old links hit a dead end. Small step, saves a lot of pain later.

New site, no traffic? It's rarely one problem.

Indexing, search demand, intent, promotion, a weak link anywhere holds the rest back. Learn how to diagnose each step in our new article

A mix-up worth clearing up: your domain and your hosting are two separate things. The domain is your address. The hosting is the actual house the site lives in.

They usually get bought together, so it's easy to assume they're one thing, until someone tries to move house and panics they'll lose the address too. You won't. You can pack up the whole site, move it to a new host, and keep the same name on the mailbox.

Did you know these were separate from the start, or did it click later?

In Marostica, northern Italy, they've played chess with people as the pieces for over 100 years!

Over 650 performers in 15th-century costumes fill a giant marble board in the town square, re-enacting a legend where a woman's hand in marriage came down to a single game. It runs every two years in a 3,600-seat amphitheatre built against a medieval castle, with the latest edition taking place in September.

Italian tech is having a good stretch. In the first half of 2026, the country's startups pulled in hundreds of millions in investment.

A good marker of the moment: Milan-based Bending Spoons listed on Nasdaq in July, in an IPO of around $1.7 billion. It's one of the larger European tech listings in recent years, and not bad for a company five friends started back in 2013 with $40,000.

From Milan to Turin, companies are building for markets well outside Italy. Which Italian startup are you keeping an eye on right now?

That study finding 58% of people couldn't reach a site because they couldn't spell the domain is worth a proper look.

The breakdown of what tripped people up: 30% blamed a name that didn't match the brand, 29% blamed length, 26% odd or unusual spelling, and 20% numbers or hyphens. The extension itself came last, at just 14%.

How a domain sounds when you say it out loud matters more than how clever it looks written down.

Ever given up on a site because you couldn't remember the exact address?

Italy's two-letter country code, IT, happens to be a real English word too. It's a small linguistic quirk that makes certain names read naturally in English as well as Italian.

From Olivetti's engineering to the design the country is known for, function and identity have long gone hand in hand here.

Ever changed your DNS and wondered why it took hours to work everywhere? That's TTL, the ""time to live"" on a record. It tells servers how long to hold the old value before checking for a new one. For a big move, lowering it ahead of time can help the switch happen faster, but if the previous value was set for longer, some DNS resolvers may still hold the old value in their caches until that period expires.

Ever sat there refreshing, waiting for a DNS change to finally kick in?

AI can generate content in minutes. It cannot automatically keep pace with how a startup’s product, customers, and positioning evolve.

A detail from this year's new gTLD round that slipped under the radar: around 1,100 of the ~1,600 applications included a fallback option. If several applicants want the same extension and one would rather not go to auction, they can switch to a backup string instead.

In 1965, a company from Ivrea showed New York a machine that fit on a desk and could be programmed like a computer. It was the Olivetti Programma 101. Some call it an early personal computer, others a programmable calculator.

Around 44,000 were sold, mostly in the US. NASA even used it for calculations on the Apollo 11 mission.

The Programma 101 was an early example of personal computing, developed in Italy and sold mainly in the US.
