While there is a general encouragement to fast throughout the month, the day of 'Āshūrā has been singled out for its virtue above all others.

Ibn ʿAbbās (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) , said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allāh (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of ʿĀshūra, and this month (meaning Ramaḍān).”
Sh Haitham al-Haddad gives a brief summary of the ʿĀshūra story and its role in defining the relationship between Islām and other innovated and/or distorted religions.

Afghanistan | Saturday 21st August⁣

The Afghan war veteran and politician Gulbuddin Hekmatyar can be seen leading in prayer a senior Taliban delegation which includes: Mullah Khairullah, Maulvi Dilawar and Abdul Salam Hanafi.⁣

Hekmatyar, a former Prime Minister of Afghanistan and the leader of Hezb-i-Islami party, on Friday said that formal talks between the Afghan political leaders and the Taliban will start once the Taliban leaders arrive in Kabul. He said the recent meetings were informal meetings.⁣

According to Hekmatyar, there are indications that the Taliban wants to establish an inclusive government in Afghanistan.
Hero worship – or at least the way we portray our historical figures – has been problematic, writes Dr Abid Mohammed. If we depict them as being superhuman individuals who never struggled in their lives, many Muslims will feel disconnected from their own heritage.
