Where the energy agenda is shaped — let’s take a closer look 🌞

On April 2–3, Kazan hosted Energoprom, one of the key industry forums in Russia’s power sector — and this year, our fellows were right at the center of it.

So what did they actually do there?

🤩Explored the exhibition space — and even had the chance to personally greet Rustam Minnikhanov, Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan, and Sergey Tsivilev, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation.

🤩Joined the plenary session to discuss the future of the electric power industry, technological sovereignty, and global energy transitions.

🤩Took the floor at the Council of Rectors meeting, where our fellows Joan Nwafor, Founder of CyberOdan, shared Nigeria’s experience in education and workforce development in the energy sector.

🤩Met with Roman Marshavin, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, to talk about international cooperation and professional pathways in the field.

From conversations to connections, from insights to real opportunities. And for our fellows, this is just the beginning.

This is where Oriental Studies actually happens ✏️

You can’t really imagine an Oriental Studies fellowship without museums. Here, they’re not part of the cultural program — they are the learning environment. History becomes something you engage with directly: through sources, artifacts, and real research context.

So where have our fellows already been?

📚 Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts

An archive where documents don’t just sit in storage. Diplomatic correspondence, decrees, traces of entire eras — all helping piece together how states, cultures, and ideas once interacted.

📚 Russian State Library

One of the largest libraries in the world, and a place where knowledge feels tangible. Here, participants worked with rare collections and research materials.

📚 Oriental Museum

A space where meaning is built visually. Through art, symbols, and material culture, fellows explored how ideas are encoded, reinterpreted, and carried across time.

Who Shapes Global Governance Today? 🌐

After exploring how to think in uncertainty, our IR fellows turned to a deeper question: how global institutions themselves are evolving. This time, the discussion continued with Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the center — a fundamental question: does the current system of international organizations still work?

Here’s what stood out:

📌The UN still matters. But without reform — especially when it comes to the Security Council — its ability to respond to today’s challenges is under pressure.

📌When it comes to representation in the Security Council, the logic is straightforward: first make the system function effectively — and only then reconsider who sits at the table.

📌The Global South is no longer on the sidelines. Its voice is getting louder, and it’s reshaping the conversation.

📌BRICS is gaining momentum. Not as a replacement, but as a platform that is gradually influencing how international cooperation is built.

Beyond simplified narratives — an attempt to understand how global institutions adapt in times of transformation and turbulence.
