From now on, we'll be sharing the stories of our amazing MEPhI science elite – our Nobel laureates. It's no secret that our university is a hub for some truly incredible minds, with six Nobel laureates having studied or worked here.

🖌 Our first hero is Nikolai Semenov.

He worked at MEPhI from 1951 to 1960 and made groundbreaking contributions to science. Semenov developed the quantitative theory of chemical chain reactions, the theory of thermal explosions, and the combustion of gas mixtures. His improvements to Bodenstein's quasi-stationary concentrations method and discoveries in catalysis are legendary.

In 1928, he discovered branched chain reactions, revolutionizing our understanding of chemical processes. This work earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1956, shared with Cyril Hinshelwood.

Semenov’s pioneering work opened vast prospects for controlling chemical processes, cementing his legacy as a scientific giant.

⚡️ Minister of Education of Egypt Visits MEPhI

MEPhI is honored to welcome the Minister of Education of Egypt, Muhammad Ayman Ashour, for a working visit. Discussions are focused on the possibility of opening a MEPhI branch in Egypt, aimed at training specialists for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, the first NPP in Egypt built with Russia's participation.

The technical details, including opening dates, programs, and curricula, are currently being finalized. Vice-Rector Dmitry Savkin, who successfully supervised the opening of MEPhI’s branch in Kazakhstan in 2022, will oversee this project.

This initiative is a vital part of MEPhI’s development program, aimed at strengthening our international presence and transforming MEPhI into a global technological leader.

MEPhI proudly celebrates Pavel Cherenkov, a renowned professor and Nobel Prize-winning physicist. Cherenkov's pioneering work on Cherenkov radiation revolutionized our understanding of particle physics.

This phenomenon, observed when charged particles travel faster than light through a medium, has become a fundamental tool in experimental physics, leading to advancements in particle detectors and medical imaging.

Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1958 for this groundbreaking discovery, Cherenkov's contributions continue to inspire innovation and excellence at MEPhI. His legacy shapes the minds of future scientists and researchers, driving forward the frontiers of science.

The ObninskTech Summer School has started

Yesterday, the Obninsk Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering of MEPhI held a grand opening of the ObninskTech Summer School. More than 100 international students from 40 countries are taking part in the event.

At the morning plenary session, Amon Murwira, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Zimbabwe, delivered a report on the role of nuclear science and technology in achieving a bright global future. Akkuyu NPP employee Sona Valieva spoke on how to develop and promote oneself as an opinion leader in the nuclear field.

Obninsk Mayor Tatyana Leonova and H. Radebe, a representative of the South African energy company Eskom, also spoke at the session. Tatyana Terentyeva, Deputy Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, and Vladimir Shevchenko, Rector of MEPhI National Research Nuclear University, participated in the plenary session remotely.

⚡️ Obninsk NEW Gathers Delegates from Over 100 Countries

On June 26, the II International Youth Nuclear Forum, Obninsk NEW, celebrated the 70th anniversary of the world's first nuclear power plant, Obninsk NPP. Held at the Rosatom Technical Academy, the forum welcomed more than 900 delegates from over 100 countries.

The MEPhI delegation, led by Rector Vladimir Shevchenko, actively participated in the celebrations.

The event featured high-level participation, including representatives from the IAEA, ITER, China National Nuclear Corporation, and other global organizations. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko conveyed a message from President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the historical significance of Obninsk NPP in launching global nuclear power development.
