I’m currently studying Experimental nuclear physics under the department of Nuclear Physics and Technology at MEPhI.
I chose MEPhI for its renowned reputation in nuclear field and engineering and because of long history of excellence of this area. And again, we get to have opportunity to learn from experts. Of course I was attracted by the location of the university - it is a huge city of Moscow 🌇

📚Yes, it is difficult to study especially in Russia because we get to use another language. You have to learn Russian language which is hard at some point to international students. Despite the challenges, I find the study material engaging and rewarding.

🫶What I love the most about living in Russia or studying in Russia is the system of education and also about the rich cultural experience and opportunity to immerse in a new environment here in Russia which made me especially choose it.

😊 Living in Russia, as my first experience living far away from my family, I appreciate the rich cultural experiences and the opportunity to immerse in a new environment.

MEPhI is not only a science, but also an active student life! 🕺

At the entrance to the National Research Nuclear University, one immediately catches the eye of the huge panels of cement and smalt mosaic located on both sides of the lobby, which have become symbols of MEPhI: "Atomic Mustang" and "Fundamental Physics" 😅

😅 The authors of these panels are abstract artists G.A.Dauman and M.M. Schwartzman. It was completed in 1963 😅

😅And since 2010, the relief "Atomic Mustang", embodying the conquest of atomic energy by mankind, has also become the logo of the MEPhI National Research Institute.

😄 The relief depicts a hand holding the reins of an atomic horse, and below is a string of formulas from nuclear physics.
University professors believe that a horse, or rather, a wild mustang, symbolizes nature, and the hand that threw the bridle is the person who restrained it.

😀The symbolism of the horse is associated with the power and strength of the atom, which is of particular importance for nuclear physics and nuclear energy. In these areas, the horse symbolizes the ability of the atom to release a huge amount of energy, which can be used for peaceful purposes for humanity😀

On March 27, a delegation from the Brazilian Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research IPEN visited MEPhI ⚛️

😅The IPEN Institute (Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares) is a Brazilian research institute located in the city of Santos, Sao Paulo State. The Institute was founded in 1956 to conduct research in the field of nuclear and energy science.

😆 The main research areas of the IPEN Institute include: nuclear physics, energy, nuclear technology, radiation protection, laser physics and radiation processes. The Institute is also engaged in the development of new materials and technologies for use in energy systems, nuclear industry and other industries.

🤝The Brazilian delegation included Niklaus Ursus Vetter, Director of Research at IPEN, Isolda Costa, Director of Internationalization, and Romula De Castro, Chief Legal Adviser to Souza Lima.

😅😄 The meeting with the Brazilian delegation was attended by the rector of the MEPhI National Research University Vladimir Shevchenko, Vice Rector Dmitry Savkin, Director for the development of isotope business in Latin America of JSC V\O Isotope (enterprise of the Rosatom State Corporation) Alexey Kibalov and other representatives of the university.

📝 During the visit, representatives of the NRU MEPhI and IPEN re-signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed for the first time in 2019.

👩🏼‍🎓🧑🏾‍🎓The meeting also discussed the launch of a joint educational program (2 diplomas) in the Nuclear science specialty.

🧑🏻‍🔬👩🏼‍🔬The guests got acquainted with the NRU MEPhI and visited some laboratories of the university, including the Nanocenter.

🏢 MEPhI dormitories are residential complexes that offer comfortable accommodation for students while studying at the university. Buildings are located near the main campus and provide various types of accommodation:
👉🏼 Bachelors and students of the preparatory course live in 2 and 3 bed rooms with shared bathrooms
👉🏼 Undergraduates and postgraduates can stay in apartment-type dormitories for 2 or 3 people in a room with its own kitchens and bathrooms

🛏️ The dormitories have everything you need for a comfortable stay: study rooms, kitchens, laundries, and, of course, furniture and household appliances. Some buildings have free gyms! All the buildings of the dormitories are in good condition after major repairs.

👉🏼 On March 29, a delegation from the Talent Exchange Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China visited us.

😆 The guests came to Moscow specifically to learn about the opportunities for the exchange of young specialists through annual internships at MEPhI and Harbin Polytechnic Universities in the fields of nuclear physics, biomedicine, IT and nanotechnology.

👉🏼 On April 1, representatives of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIOM) arrived in MEPhI on a second visit.

📄Rector Vladimir Shevchenko and SIOM Director Chen Weibiao signed a Memorandum of Understanding providing for mutual exchange in the field of higher education and scientific research. It is planned to develop joint research programs and joint use of research infrastructures, create joint research laboratories, organize bilateral symposiums and conferences, exchange students, as well as conduct specialized and comprehensive programs for bachelors, masters and postgraduates.

🤝As a result of the negotiations, representatives of the NRU MEPhI received an invitation to pay a return visit to the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics.

🌏 Leading Chinese universities and research institutes are actively interested in cooperation with MEPhI. Ties with Asian countries are becoming stronger every year!

✍️Where are nuclear technologies used today? ✍️

😆 When we hear about the use of nuclear technology, we almost always imagine a nuclear power plant or the defense industry.

☝🏼But nuclear technology is now spreading to a much wider range of industries.

⚛️ First of all, it should be said that MEPhI is the flagship university of Rosatom, which has been increasingly developing international cooperation in recent years. Rosatom is a member of many international organizations, including the IAEA, and participates in a number of international projects that are not always related to the construction of nuclear power plants ⚛️

🌿Agriculture. Nuclear technologies are used in agriculture mainly in the form of radioisotope radiation sources. They are used to sterilize food, such as meat, vegetables and fruits. They can also be used to increase the shelf life of products and improve their quality. Such technologies, with the assistance of Rosatom, are actively used in the countries of South America and Southeast Asia.

💊Medicine. Nuclear technologies are widely used in medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. For example, radioisotope diagnostics is used to identify various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and others. Therapeutic procedures such as radiotherapy use ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells. The company is also developing technologies for the safe storage of nuclear waste and minimizing its environmental impact.

The delegation of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI is currently in New Delhi, the capital of India, where it is taking part in the Indian-Russian Education Summit (Indo-Russian Education Summit 2024) 🇮🇳🇷🇺

🥲 The task facing our representatives is to promote the university's educational programs in India. Did you know that MEPhI is the basic university of the main space corporation in Russia? 👽

👨🏻‍🚀 Yes, indeed, MEPhI cooperates with Roscosmos. And today, on Cosmonautics Day, we want to tell you about the connection of our university with space!

🚀MEPhI formally became the main university of the Roscosmos State Corporation just 2 years ago, in fact, the university has always been one. Yuri Polyakov, Executive Director of Finance at Roscomos, is a graduate of MEPhI, and Yuri Borisov, General Director of Roscosmos, was previously head of the Electronics Department (No. 3) at MEPhI National Research University. Two cosmonauts Nikolai Rukavishnikov and Sergey Avdeev graduated from MEPhI.

💫We talk about MEPhI's space projects💫

🛰️ Satellites and engines for them. Vera and Lena plasma propulsion systems for nano- and microsatellites have been developed at the Laboratory of Rocket Plasma Engines of the Institute of Laser and Plasma Technologies of the MEPhI. Vera has already been tested in space. MEPhI also created the Svyatobor-1 satellite for monitoring forest fires, which was launched on June 27, 2023. It is planned to create a small innovative enterprise for the production of engines for satellites. The main buyer of engines from MEPhI is a Russian private space company.

🌞The NEVOD (that means in Russian ‘net’) catches cosmic rays. The unique scientific installation NEVOD is designed to study cosmic rays. It includes a number of physical installations and detectors that have no analogues in the world. The composition of the detectors is constantly being updated, and this year the vertical TREK detector will be finally assembled. At the end of March, employees of the REC NEVOD using the HURRICANE hodoscope may have been the first to record a unique solar flare — GLE-74.

⭐️What's inside the stars? One of the important areas of space research in which scientists of the MEPhI participate is laboratory astrophysics, studies of extreme states of matter similar to those that occur, for example, inside stars and during catastrophic astrophysical events. Of course, such research requires installations of the "megascience" class, therefore, the MEPhI can carry out such research only in collaboration with other organizations. So, in 2022-2023. MEPhI graduate students took part in an experiment at the BM@N installation as part of the Nuclotron-NICA scientific complex in Dubna near Moscow. During the experiment, conditions close to those that occur in space when neutron stars collide were recreated. These data are currently being analyzed – the first results will be reported at the ICPPA 2024 conference at the MEPhI in October this year.
