On 29 June 2026, exactly 36 years after the 18 April 1990 abduction, torture, and murder of 27 year old SKIMS nurse Sarla Bhat, the State Investigation Agency (SIA) of Jammu and Kashmir filed a 737 page chargesheet naming jailed JKLF terrorist and former chief Yasin Malik as the alleged mastermind.
Investigators allege the killing was part of the 1990 campaign of targeted violence that led to the mass exodus of over 5 lakh Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley.
The chargesheet is based on witness testimonies, forensic and ballistic evidence, electronic records, and documentary evidence collected during the reinvestigation launched in March 2024.
