High Impact Reading Tips

1. Don’t read everything in detail
A common mistake is trying to understand every word.
👉 Instead:
Skim first (read quickly for general idea)
Then scan for specific information when answering questions

2. Read the questions BEFORE the passage
This saves time and gives you a purpose.
👉 Look for:
•Keywords (names, dates, unusual words)
•Question type (T/F/NG, matching, etc.

3. Learn to identify synonyms (very important)
IELTS rarely uses the same words.
Example:
•Question: “increase in population”
•Passage: “a rise in the number of people”

4. Master common question types
Each type has a strategy:
True / False / Not Given
True = same meaning
False = opposite meaning
Not Given = information NOT mentioned
Matching headings
Focus on main idea of paragraph, not details
Sentence completion
Watch word limits (e.g., NO MORE THAN 2 WORDS)

5. Use scanning techniques properly
👉 When scanning:
•Move your eyes quickly
•Look for capital letters, numbers, keywords
•Don’t read line by line

6. Time management = everything
You have 60 minutes for 3 passages
👉 Suggested:
Passage 1 → 15–17 min
Passage 2 → 20 min
Passage 3 → 23–25 min

7. Answers come in order (mostly!)
For many question types: 👉 The answers follow the same order as the text
Use this to avoid searching the whole passage again

8. Be careful with “Not Given”
This is the trickiest one.
👉 Ask:
•Is the information clearly in the text? → Yes = True/False
•Is it missing? → Not Given
Don’t assume anything.

9. Practice under real conditions
Use a timer (strict 60 minutes)
No dictionary
Practice regularly

10. Improve reading speed daily
Read English every day:
Articles (BBC, National Geographic)
Academic texts
👉 Focus on:
Speed + understanding main idea
