10 common reasons why people don't receive scholarships:
Low Academic Performance – Many scholarships require a minimum GPA or strong academic record.
Missing Application Deadlines – Submitting an application after the deadline usually results in automatic disqualification.
Incomplete Applications – Missing documents, essays, transcripts, or recommendation letters can make an application ineligible.
Weak Personal Statement or Essay – A generic, poorly written, or off-topic essay may fail to distinguish the applicant.
Not Meeting Eligibility Requirements – Applicants may not qualify based on age, nationality, field of study, financial need, or other criteria.
Lack of Extracurricular Activities – Many scholarship providers look for leadership, community service, volunteer work, or other achievements beyond academics.
Poor Letters of Recommendation – Weak, generic, or late recommendation letters can reduce an applicant's chances.
High Competition – Some scholarships receive thousands of applications, making selection highly competitive even for qualified candidates.
Failure to Follow Instructions – Ignoring application guidelines, exceeding word limits, or submitting the wrong documents can hurt an application.
Insufficient Preparation – Waiting until the last minute often leads to rushed applications, avoidable mistakes, and weaker overall submissions.
While these factors can reduce the chances of receiving a scholarship, they don't necessarily prevent future success. Improving academic performance, gaining relevant experience, preparing strong application materials, and applying to multiple scholarships can significantly increase the likelihood of being awarded one.

A Student from Bamiyan
Years ago, I taught physics at one of the university entrance exam (Kankor) preparation centers in Bamiyan.
Among our students was a young girl who always came to class wearing very worn-out clothes, her face cracked from the bitter cold of Bamiyan’s winters. One of the reasons she studied at our educational center was the tuition discount we had arranged for her.
As the Kankor exam approached, she came to me one day and said:
“Teacher, I want to talk to you about something.”
She told me that because she had no brother and her family’s living expenses depended on the land where they grew potatoes and wheat, she had to work alongside her father in the fields and help with farming.
Then she said, “My father does not agree with me continuing my education, but we made a deal: if I am accepted into a university, he will allow me to continue my studies. So please arrange my five university choices in a way that matches the scores I am currently getting on the practice exams, so that I can get into university. I honestly don’t care which city it is, what field I study, or where it is. I just want to get into university.”
I arranged her five choices, and that same year, she was accepted into Bamiyan University.
To this day, I do not know whether, after Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, she was actually able to enter university or not. But I do know that even if she did, sooner or later she was deprived of continuing her education and of many of the dreams she had for her future.
Bamiyan, like Daikundi, Ghor, and Uruzgan, is among the most deprived regions of Afghanistan; and the roots of this deprivation can be found in systematic discrimination.
Those years at the educational center, we spent the cold winters and difficult days alongside our students. Despite everything, we held on to one great hope: that the girls and boys in those classrooms would enter university, continue their education, and shape their own futures.
But Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. One after another, my students were forced to abandon that path. None of them entered university, and none of them ever got to wear a graduation gown.
Despite all this suffering and pain, there are still people who call Ashraf Ghani “Baba” and Mohaqiq “Ustad”—without understanding what these figures, who were nothing more than puppets in a much larger game, did to an entire generation of young Afghans.
