Brazil declares state of emergency after soy crop inundated by rains

SAO PAULO, March 15 (Reuters) - Brazil’s major farm town Sorriso declared “a state of emergency” last week after heavy rains during the summer grain harvest caused crop losses and damaged local infrastructure, a local government representative told Reuters on Monday.

The downpours damaged part of the town’s grain crop and disrupted local roads, making it difficult to move produce and restricting the circulation of people in the area.

Wet weather has also delayed planting of Brazil’s second corn crop, which is sown after the soy is harvested in the same areas. Brazil’s farmers have sown 74% of the estimated second corn crop area in Brazil’s Center-South region, less than the 89% in the last season, the consultancy said.

In most parts of Brazil, the ideal climate window for planting the second corn crop has closed, according to AgRural.

Ok - the data is coming in for Brazil's safrinha crop (the crop of corn they sneak in after beans are harvested). As we've covered here in depth, the soybeans were very delayed, and the safrinha missed the planting window. Now we're getting a sense of the damage, and it's massive.

#Brazil: crop damage after hard freezes.
Brazil feverishly importing after the failure of corn crops. Brazil is typically one of the world's largest exporters.

SAO PAULO, BRAZILJBS SA, the world’s largest meat packer, imported 30 shiploads of corn from Argentina into Brazil due to a crop failure in Brazil, Reuters reported, citing a statement it received.

JBS said purchases from suppliers outside of Brazil represent 25% of the corn it is using as feed, with volumes greater than 1 million tonnes.

Weather-related problems with Brazil's second corn crop have led to companies exiting their contracts on washout clauses, threatening exports, Reuters said.

Brazil's second corn crop represents between 70% and 75% of all output in a given year and is the country's biggest corn crop.

Repeated uncharacteristically cold temperatures in Brazil's growing regions:

SAO PAULO, BRAZILFreezing temperatures this week in Brazil could hurt corn and wheat in the nation’s southern and southeastern states, Reuters reported, citing Conab, the government’s food supply and statistics agency.

There is risk of moderate and severe frosts in Sao Paulo and Parana states, which could affect second corn that is in the grain-filling stage as well as wheat that is in the flowering stage.

Corn and wheat in Mato Grosso do Sul could also be hit by frosts, though in fewer areas, Conab said.

Conab predicts crop failure due to water stress followed by frosts in three states in relation to second corn, Reuters said.

A production drop is also expected for wheat due to drought in Goiás and frosts in Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and western fields in Paraná.

Just one more example — JBS, world’s biggest meat company — drops $100 mil for a lab-grown meat company. Doesn’t make any sense unless you accept JBS — a WEF partner! — is replacing itself, at the behest of the WEF, positioning for the #PostAnimalEconomy:

Brazilian meatpacker JBS has agreed to buy Spanish company BioTech Foods, while also creating a new research and development center in Brazil for lab meat as part of a $100 million push into the fast-growing sector.

“The acquisition marks the company’s entry into the cultivated protein market,” JBS said in a filing.

Two dams collapsed in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia over the weekend after weeks of heavy rain.

On Saturday night, the Igua dam on the Verruga river near Vitoria da Conquista in southern Bahia collapsed. The second dam broke about 62 miles to the north on Sunday morning.

The floods have affected 40 cities throughout Bahia, Gov. Rui Costa said. He said at least 35,000 people had been displaced from their homes.

"This is a massive tragedy. I can't remember seeing anything like this in Bahia's recent history, given the amount of cities and houses involved. It's truly terrifying, there are so many houses and streets that are completely underwater," Costa said.

Brazilian corn farmers report atrazine shortage, putting safrinha crop (generally their exports) at risk.

Brazil is a top exporter of corn — without that crop, major issues worldwide:
____

As Brazilian farmers are planting their safrinha corn crop, they face atrazine shipping delays and unexpected canceled deliveries, according to soybean grower group Aprosoja Brasil and corn lobby Abramilho. The groups say the shortage could put the safrinha corn crop at risk. The leading corn production herbicide is used to control broadleaf weeds, including volunteer soybeans.

Brazilian soybean processors have halted operations as crushing margins turned negative.

Abiove, a trade group representing global oilseed crushers in Brazil, confirmed the move, telling Reuters some of its members advanced scheduled maintenance stoppages that traditionally happen at the end of the year as soyoil prices dropped while soybean prices remained high, hurting margins.
