CUEGIS POST

Dear IB Students!

For those who study Business & Management it might be relevant to prepare well for Paper 2 CUEGIS Essay, which accounts for 10% of your final score for the exam.

CUEGIS is a way to apply B&M course knowledge in the real world. You will need to draw parallels between the business that you have chosen and the actual business course.

— First try to get the idea of the 6 CUEGIS concepts, which are:

1. Change
With this aspect you want to show how the business company reacted to specific external (world changes) or internal (within the business) alterations.

2. Culture
Explain what culture a business has and what industry it operates in. What is the environment of the business? What values and backgrounds influence what stakeholders focus on and how they work in the company?

3. Ethics
Talk about some ethical considerations of the business. What are their values and moral implications?

4. Globalization
How were the business operations changing during time? Consider social, technological, economic factors that influenced the business capitalizing on markets across the globe.

5. Innovation
How was the business able to change its services or products? Innovation emphasizes the empowerment of the business to become more competitive and level up to a more technologically advanced market place.

6. Strategy
How did the business make adjustments to achieve long-term goals? Here you want to talk about the long-term planning decisions that organizations make in order to meet the needs and wants of their stakeholders.

? Now what do we do next?

! The most common student’s mistake is to immediately Google everything up about the business.

—> Instead, try to find parallels with the course concepts and its corresponding concept.
So here is the guide to build a knowledge base in an efficient manner to save your time:

After understanding the concepts you have a clearer image of the company you need to pick.

1. Choose a company from the industry you like.
(Eg: Apple — tech industry/ LVMH — fashion industry/ CVS Health — medical industry)

2. Use IB B&M guide and look at the pages 12-14, this is where you will find every single concept and the likely corresponding course content. (All the materials are attached bellow)

3. Type in your business in Google (news.google.com) + the corresponding heading of the course (eg Apple’s organization structure).
The articles may pinpoint you to specific learning objectives from the course content.

4. To make your answer more precise glance at the syllabus content in B&M guide page 26 and when you are talking about, for instance, 2.2 organizational structure, you will see that the following terminology is needed to be used in your essay.

5. Be reasonable, meaning that you do not need to talk about every syllabus context that is written in the guide.

Dear IB Students!

English B IO exam is coming up. For those who are still preparing, here is an incredible YouTube video by Aymon Holth https://youtu.be/zGEfSMekc8s
Aymon went through all the criteria form the resource booklet and gave his personal tips on how to prepare well for this exam.

Brief key insights from the video:

⁃ knowing the criteria is significant, you will figure out exactly what examiners want to hear from you
⁃ The first part of the speech consists of free parts:
1. summarise the extract
2. briefly relate the extract to the literary work as a whole
3. express your opinion on the characters, events, ideas and themes presented in the extract) — yes… that simple
⁃ Everything you say should be relevant to the extract that is being analysed
⁃ The use of idiomatic expressions and complex grammatical structures is vital
⁃ It is important to make personal interpretations related to the theme of the extract
⁃ In order to prepare for the second part of oral presentation — discussion — it would be useful to look through the themes of English B Programme and answer the questions that are related to each topic (see the photo below)
⁃ This presentation should seem like a natural dialog between you and your teacher, hence try to engage with them, ask questions back that will allow the teacher to continue the conversation
⁃ One way of practicing English B oral is literally talking to the wall, speaking your Language B

Maybe some of you have already passed this exam, if so please feel free to share your experience and thoughts in the comments!

Good luck guys!
