CHARISMATIC MEGFAUNA πŸ‘‡

They are animal species that are largeβ€”in the relevant category that they represent with symbolic value or widespread popular appeal, and are often used by environmental activists to gain public support for environmentalist goals.

In a 2018 study, the top twenty most popular charismatic megafauna were found to be (first to last): the tiger, lion, elephant, giraffe, leopard, giant panda, cheetah, polar bear, wolf, gorilla, chimpanzee, zebra, hippopotamus, great white shark, crocodile, dolphin, rhinoceros, brown bear, koala and blue whale.

In short - Charismatic species are often used as flagship species in conservation programs, as they are supposed to affect people's feelings more.

We know that,

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the global standard for assessing the risk of extinction that individual species of animal, fungus, and plant faces.

But what is IUCN Green Status of Species?

The IUCN Green Status of Species complements the Red List by providing a tool for assessing the recovery of species’ populations and measuring their conservation success. In 2020, Green Status of Species assessments became an optional part of Red List assessments.

How did you solve these questions from UPSC Civil Services Prelims 2023?

I studied both Shankar & PMF Textbooks but still wasn't able to approach them confidently. The reason? There's no single textbook that covers these things entirely.

Since 2010, UPSC has been asking about the Species mentioned in Schedules of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Last year, it was 4 questions from this topic which makes it 8 marks / 10% of the cutoff (75.41 was the cutoff).

This year, I've been making notes for myself to overcome difficulties in such topics, which cannot be covered in the textbooks.

I'll be sharing a lot of such notes in the last 45 days which can add 20-30 marks boost to your prelims score.

I've made a telegram study channel which contains notes of ALL 217 mammals mentioned in WPA.

Study 20 species everyday and finish it in 10 days. Hardly will take 15-20 minutes. Do this and get an edge of 4 to 6 marks in your prelims score :)
