Pontius Pilate
Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor (prefect or procurator) of the Roman province of Judea from around 26 to 36 AD, during the reign of Emperor Tiberius. His primary responsibilities were to maintain law and order, oversee tax collection, and administer justice in the region.
Historical Background
Appointed by Emperor Tiberius — Pilate was appointed as the fifth prefect of Judea, a province that was known for its religious tension and frequent unrest.
Roman Rule in Judea — Judea was a challenging province for Rome due to deep-seated Jewish traditions and the people’s resistance to foreign rule.
Pilate in the New Testament
Pontius Pilate is most famously remembered for his role in the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The four Gospels describe the events in some detail:
1. Trial of Jesus
Jesus was brought to Pilate by the Jewish religious leaders who accused him of claiming to be the King of the Jews, a political threat to Roman authority.
Pilate questioned Jesus and reportedly found no basis for a death sentence.
He attempted to release Jesus, offering to pardon him as part of a Passover custom, but the crowd chose Barabbas, a rebel, instead.
2. Pilate's Dilemma
Pilate is portrayed as hesitant and somewhat fearful of the situation.
According to Matthew 27:19, Pilate’s wife sent him a message warning him not to have anything to do with Jesus, whom she called "an innocent man" because of a troubling dream she had.
To symbolically show his innocence, Pilate famously washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood” (Matthew 27:24).
3. The Crucifixion
Pilate reluctantly gave in to the crowd’s demand for crucifixion.
He ordered Jesus to be scourged and then crucified.
Above Jesus' cross, Pilate had the inscription "INRI" placed, meaning Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum — "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
Pilate in History Outside the Bible
Tacitus (Roman historian) confirms that Pilate ordered Jesus' execution.
Josephus, a Jewish historian, also mentions Pilate in his writings.
Philo of Alexandria criticized Pilate’s harshness, describing him as corrupt, cruel, and stubborn.
The Pilate Stone, an archaeological find from 1961 in Caesarea Maritima, is an inscription bearing Pilate’s name and title — confirming his historical existence.
Later Legends and Fate
Some Christian traditions claim Pilate later converted to Christianity, while others say he was punished or committed suicide under Emperor Caligula.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church considers both Pilate and his wife saints, seeing his hand-washing as a sign of acknowledging Jesus' innocence.
Pilate's Legacy
Pontius Pilate remains a complex figure — caught between political pressure and personal conscience. In Christian thought, he symbolizes:
Moral weakness and the consequences of choosing convenience over justice.
A ruler who feared public opinion more than standing by the truth.
Early Church Fathers thought about Pontius Pilate.
Their writings give us a sense of how the earliest generations of Christians understood his role.
Early Church Fathers on Pontius Pilate
1. Tertullian (c. 155–240 AD)
Tertullian, one of the earliest Latin theologians, often referred to Pilate in his writings.
He considered Pilate as someone who recognized Jesus’ innocence but still bowed to political pressure.
Tertullian mentions that Pilate sent a report (an “acta”) about Jesus to Emperor Tiberius — and according to Tertullian, Tiberius was so impressed he considered placing Jesus among the Roman gods (Apology 21).
Tertullian does not view Pilate as a saint, but rather as a weak and pressured official.
2. Justin Martyr (c. 100–165 AD)
Justin Martyr refers to Pilate several times in his First Apology.
He claims that the details of Jesus’ crucifixion were recorded in official Roman archives (called the “Acts of Pontius Pilate”).

Justin Martyr refers to Pilate several times in his First Apology.
He claims that the details of Jesus’ crucifixion were recorded in official Roman archives (called the “Acts of Pontius Pilate”).
Justin’s references suggest Pilate was a key witness to the event, though not a believer.
Justin does not glorify Pilate — he sees him as the Roman tool through which Jesus was unjustly executed.
3. Eusebius of Caesarea (c. 260–340 AD)
In his Ecclesiastical History, Eusebius compiles what earlier Christians believed about Pilate.
He records that Pilate eventually fell out of favor with the Roman Empire and committed suicide.
Eusebius emphasizes Pilate's cowardice and injustice in sentencing an innocent man to death.
4. Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD)
St. Augustine reflected on Pilate’s role in The City of God.
Augustine acknowledges that Pilate knew Jesus was innocent and tried to free Him.
He interprets Pilate’s symbolic hand-washing as an admission of guilt and moral failure for giving in to pressure.
Augustine does not see Pilate as a righteous man — more as an example of a weak ruler caught between justice and fear.
Pontius Pilate is seen in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC)
Pontius Pilate in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church
1. Veneration as a Saint
In the EOTC, Pontius Pilate and his wife, Procla (Claudia Procula), are both commemorated as saints.
Their feast day is celebrated on 17 Sene (June 24/25 in the Gregorian calendar).
This is unique to Ethiopian Christianity — no other major Christian tradition venerates Pilate.
2. Why Is Pilate Honored?
In EOTC teaching and tradition:
Pilate recognized the innocence of Christ and publicly declared, “I find no fault in this man.”
He washed his hands before the people to show he did not consent to Jesus’ death — seen as a sign of partial righteousness.
It’s believed in Ethiopian tradition that Pilate later repented and accepted the Christian faith, much like the Roman centurion at the cross.
His wife Procla is especially honored for receiving a divine dream (Matthew 27:19) warning Pilate not to condemn Jesus. In Ethiopian tradition, she is viewed as a righteous and believing woman.
3. EOTC Writings and Traditions
In Ethiopian church literature:
Ancient homilies, synaxarium (hagiographies), and oral traditions speak sympathetically about Pilate.
The Synaxarium of the Ethiopian Church includes entries about his feast and mentions his acknowledgment of Jesus’ innocence.
Some Ethiopian traditions even suggest that Pilate’s report to Emperor Tiberius led to the spread of the Gospel within Rome.
4. Theological Meaning in EOTC
In EOTC theology:
Pilate represents a figure who, while weak and politically pressured, was still moved by the truth of Christ.
His actions are seen as incomplete — but his later repentance and recognition of Christ allow him to be counted among the saints.
The EOTC often emphasizes the mercy of God in receiving even those involved in the crucifixion, like the thief on the cross, the centurion, and Pilate.
