Sea luminescence is a natural phenomenon of bioluminescence caused by billions of microscopic organisms. When mechanically stimulated, they release a special enzyme that reacts with oxygen, producing a bluish-green glow. The glow serves as a defense mechanism – the bright flash frightens predators or attracts larger animals that consume their enemies. Often observed in August, the phenomenon requires swarms of plankton and water movement.
Swimming in the glowing sea is not recommended, as the glowing plankton releases toxic substances that can cause burning and allergic reactions.
