⭕️ Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flood Cause $4 Million Damage

7Berkeh: The result of no less than 118 millimeters of rainfall in just a few hours in a draught-stricken county like Gerash is, obviously, flash flood.

💦 On Saturday and Sunday, January 1st and 2nd, 2022, Gerash received its share of the heavy rainfall that washed over the provinces of the south-west and south of Iran.

☔️ Such an unequalled rainfall in the recent decades brought joy to the people’s heart; but, at the same time, it brought about damages to many hearths.

📌 According to the Gerash Governor, Majid Gholampour, more than 350 houses in the city of Gerash and the villages around it were partly or completely destroyed. The manager of Agriculture-Jihad Office of Gerash reported that more than 3,000 acres of gardens and agriculture fields were seriously damaged by the flood.

📌 The overall damage of the heavy rainfall and flash flood is estimated at around 4 million dollars, said the Governor.

🔬 High School Students Competed in Atom’s Orbit
✍️ Raheleh Bahador

🔬 High school students of Gerash, both girls and boys, amused themselves in the creative competition of “In Atom’s Orbit” and evaluated their scientific information as well.

🧬 A game that started by some girl students of Imam-Hassan High School five years ago has now turned into the most amusing scientific event in Gerash high schools. To host the third period of this competition on 9th and 10th of February, 2023, the high school classes were turned into an orbital and the students had to look for and gather atoms in eight orbitals.

💬 ““In Atom’s Orbit” bubbled from the mind of four eighth grade students,” said Maryam Naseri, one of the competition’s organizers, “the idea was supported and turned into practice. Our motto was this: “Just do it!”. Our utmost purpose was to exit the monotonous orbit of being a student.”

🎁 But the main part was the announcement of winner teams. After eliminating the two teams that had tried to reach the first rank by cheating, one girls' team and one boys' team won the first prize. The 4th group of girls including Hosna Moqtaderi, Melika Sadeghi and Fatemeh Mehrvari and the 28th group of boys including Amir Hossein Khandan, Abolfazl Bivareh and Mehdi Fathi with 935 atoms jointly became the first teams. Zahra Nejati, Fatemeh Abbaspour and Paria Shadmehr stood on the second rank with 875 points, and Hanieh Kargar, Elaheh Saadat and Zeinab Dastar were the third team of the competition with 855 points.

♻️ Zero Waste: A Creative and Pleasing Lifestyle
✍️ S. Atefeh Masoumi
▫️ Translated by Raheleh Bahador

Have you ever thought where exactly the garbage you “throw out” go? Have you ever seen landfills or recycling centers nearby or even in documentary programs or videos on the internet?

⭕️ Landfills of garbage and rivers flowing from leachates are the most bitter things to see. Garbage that we throw away is around us, close to another person or a living being, and even if it is apparently far away from us, its effect will eventually return to us, sometimes in the water and the food we eat. Sometimes in the air we breathe, and other times in the form of new diseases that are increasing day by day.

What does “Zero Waste” mean?
#ZeroWaste is a lifestyle that, along with its countless benefits, has two important aims: reducing waste and preserving the environment.

✔️ Zero Waste is a path, not a destination; a pleasing path in which the more you proceed, the more energetic you become. The satisfactory feeling of doing it will appear in your personality and other aspects of life.

📌 There is a principle that is dominant in all aspects of Zero Waste lifestyle: an object or product should enter the waste cycle as late as possible. This can be achieved in different ways: by changing its usage, lending it or even reusing it. By and large, every creative idea that keeps the object in the use-cycle will lead to the reduction of waste.

🌊 In the Name of Ahmad Eghtedari, a Prize for Persian Gulf Studies
✍️ 7Berkeh - Raheleh Bahador

💬 “The Persian Gulf is the heart of Iran; and Ahmad Eghtedari is the heart of the Persian Gulf.” It was based on this statement by Shafiei Kadkani, one of the greatest literary figures of Iran, that the conference held in Gerash on the Persian Gulf National Day, on April 29th, was named “The Persian Gulf, the Heart of Iran”.

▪️ It was a memorial for Professor Ahmad Eghtedari (1925-2019) known as “The Father of Persian Gulf Studies”, and an occasion to introduce the cultural prize in his name, the biennial Ahmad Eghtedari Prize, among his lovers from every age and social class. It was Dr. Eghtedari's wish to allocate this prize to students, scholars and authors who have written a treatise, a scholarly article or a research book about the Persian Gulf and the southern regions of Iran, with the aim of continuing Persian Gulf researches.

▫️ Dr. Sadegh Rahmanian, Dr. Eghtedari’s trustee, was the first lecturer of this event. He introduced Professor Eghtedari as the “nurse” of Iran and said: “nursing Iran, he was not an Iranologist but an Iran worshiper. He is the lover of Iran and its culture and history.”

▫️ Dr. Ahmad Joulaei Bushehri, a member of the art faculty of Bushehr and Tehran Azad University, was the second lecturer of the conference. He called Dr. Eghtedari “an anthropologist who worked in the field of culture as a national heritage.”

▫️ Dr. Ebrahim Abbasi, a professor of political sciences in Shiraz University, was the key speaker of the conference. He stated that Dr. Eghtedari’s research and works are referenced even in Arabic countries of Persian Gulf.

🌐 After a short clip about Dr. Eghtedari’s life, Amir hossein Nobahar introduced the website eghtedariprize.ir designed for introducing Dr. Eghtedari’s life and works as well as the prize.

✔️ “This prize is meant to carry out Dr. Eghtedari’s will,” Mohammad Khajehpour said while introducing the biennial Ahmad Eghtedari Prize, “By receiving various researches, we are hopeful to have a treasure of Persian Gulf studies in Gerash.”

✍️ Raheleh Bahador

🗃 Two of the old local rites in Gerash known as Al-Ghouth religious recitation and Sang-Awi Grand Mosque Mourning were registered in the national list of intangible monuments of cultural heritage.

💬 “Intangible cultural heritage are those cultural productions and procedures that have survived in the passage of time from previous generations,” said Seyed Afif-Oddin Zandavi, director of Cultural Heritage Office in Gerash.

💧 In Sang-Awi Grand Mosque, the rain is gathered in a huge bowl-shaped stone and the water is used to make sherbet in religious ceremonies.

🗳 Boroujerdi, the Seasoned Politician, Wins Parliamentary Election in the South of Fars
✍️ Raheleh Bahador

✔️ The triumph of Ala-Addin Boroujerdi in the 12th of Islamic Parliament election was formally declared by the Governor of Larestan in the morning of March 2nd 2024.

▫️ This is the sixth time he becomes MP. He was MP in the sixth to tenth periods of parliament and rose to such high positions as the Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Islamic Parliament.

🗳 The election of Islamic Parliament members is held every four years in Iran. In the election that was held on Friday March 1st, the total number of 97207 votes were drawn out of the ballot boxes in the electorate area of Larestan, Khonj, Gerash, Evaz and Jouyom. This was a rather calm election since Boroujerdi’s triumph was anticipated by many. Finally, this experienced politician who ran for parliament from Lar for the second time, gained 39924 votes, 41 percent of total votes, and entered the twelfth Islamic Parliament.

▫️ The second in the list of candidates for the election was Qasem Farsoodeh, a candidate from Gerash that gained 20218 votes.

▫️The successful experience of consensus in Gerash, which meant the sidestepping of other candidates who had a weaker chance to win in favor of one candidate, in the previous election made other cities to accede on a single candidate in order to strengthen the chance of their city to win. Accordingly, Lar as the most populated city in this electorate area announced Boroujerdi as its selective candidate. Gerash, the second populated city, introduced Qasem Farsoudeh; Khonj chose Vahid Hadipour; Beiram introduced Allireza Shahrokhian; and Evaz chose Mehran Askari as their candidates. Eventually, it was Boroujerdi who won the competition among the fourteen candidates.

▫️ Like all the other cities in Iran, the share of void votes was striking in this period as they included 5345 votes in this electorate area, namely 5.5 percent of votes in general.

🐴 The Viral Tragedy of a Horse-Riding Club
✍️ Raheleh Bahador

🦠 The outbreak of a virus in Fazel Horse-Riding Club in Gerash that led to the death of 29 horses was more than a shock; it was seen as a serious warning to the blooming industry in Gerash. Though the vaccine of the Herpes virus, the cause of the deaths, is available in other countries in the world, it is not accessible in Iran.

▪️ The news of the death of several horse of unknown causes broke out in February and March 2024. It happened just a few days before holding a national competition. Later lab results showed that a virus called Herpes was the cause of death. But 29 horse with the value of nearly 5 hundred thousand dollars had to die before the disease was contained.

🦠 The accurate source and the factor of entrance of the virus, however, is unknown. “Based on some samples sent to several national and international labs, clostridium has been positive and the infection to the virus was reported in some other samples. It seems that the simultaneity of two sources of food and virus have caused the disease,” said Fazel Fathi, the owner of the club, in an interview with Haft-Berkeh news agency.

🐴 Fazel Horse-Riding Club is among the oldest ones in Gerash. “Since February 13th 2024, the infection of a horse led to other casualties and it increased gradually. Obviously, the virus had existed in several clubs across the country for a long time which had led to casualties and it has been spreading, but sufficient information has not been provided and the responsible organizations have not reacted effectively.”

🐴 The horses were a selected group of the best breeds in Iran, namely Dareh-Shoori and Kurdish horses. “The selected horses were the outcome of twenty years of hard work and experience in the field of horse riding. As genetic supplies, the amount of the damages cannot be easily determined,” said Fazel Fathi.

🐟 Mahweh or Fish Sause: The Traditional Food of the South of Iran

▫️ 7Berkeh: “Mahyaweh”, or “Mahweh” in the local accent, or “Mashaweh” in Arabic, is the famous local salty fish sauce that is used in the preparation of many dishes in the Southern regions of Iran. It consists of two words in local accent; “Mahi” that means “fish” and “Aoh” that means “water”. It is smelly but is also the people’s favorite food in Gerash, especially in the long nights of winter or as they hang out together in Norouz in gardens.

🧇 Mahweh is served on many different types of bread, though the smell of it will be unpleasant for those who use it for the first time. But people get accustomed to it very soon as it is agreeable to almost every taste! The way to make it is not that simple, though, as it has many long rough rules and rites.

▫️How the ingredients are prepared
▫️How the sauce is made
▫️How to serve it
