The Siege of PolyU - The Osaka Winter Campaign ć» Long March
Editorās Note: The Siege of Osaka was a major uprising against the Tokugawa rule from 1614-1615. It could be divided into two stages - the Summer and Winter Campaign. After the initial Winter Campaign, the Osaka Castle had fallen in the later Summer Campaign, and the uprising was put to an end.
(19 Nov) After the past few days, I believe that true Hong Kongers would feel the same way. Those who understand need to say no more; those who donāt will never do.
It has been indeed unsatisfactory to shift from ābe waterā guerilla warfare to positional warfare: it is heartbreaking to see our youths sacrificing in vain. Yet, it is truly shameless of the governmentās mouthpiece to promote the policeās devious plans, their draconian deployment, how they planned ambush at all sides, how they played the song āSurroundedā and how they truly suppressed and toyed with a whole generation of youths as in a blood feud.
If the youths made any mistake, it is merely their overestimation of the civility of their opponents. They thought, unless [the conflict] became a matter of life and death, the police would not besiege [the campus], including medical personnel, press, and councillors who were trying to meditate. Within the campus, apart from University students and youths, there were one hundred-odd secondary school students. While there were indeed ācriminalsā deemed by the police, it is impossible, under the presumption of innocence principle in a society with the rule of law, that everyone would be a so-called rioter. Assuming that there is still the rule of law in Hong Kong, it will be difficult to gather evidence for pressing a riot charge in the vast campus. So the legal risk of the students on the campus was very limited. Yet, they would rather escape by climbing down ropes and drains: this is clearly not a display of guilt, but a total loss of confidence in the police's discipline. According to the logic the police used to justify besieging the campus, they could as well besiege any building, claiming that all tenants are rioters, and attack indiscriminately. The students did not fail to anticipate, but were just pure-hearted.
After this battle, the number of people arrested and injured was still being counted, but should be very large nevertheless. It includes the numerous supporters that came from outside, probably comparable to the total tally of the past six months - a tragedy comparable to the Osaka Winter Campaign. The official media was pleased to say that this was an āentrapment to attack the enemyās aidā which lured the snake out of its hole. Yet, to the 100,000 who came to aid and the countless āpeaceful, rational, and non-violentā protestors behind them, they clearly knew that this was a trap. Yet, they did not lose their bearing like Carrie Lam. They would rather go through this to show that they stood together. Each would make plans of rescue behind the scenes and would create a rather stunning occasion. This is not a failure to anticipate, but a show of determination to sustain the momentum of this movement.
Carrie Lamās regime still thinks that they are āstopping violence and curbing disorder.ā But this is the 21st century Hong Kong: with the wisdom of Hongkongers, there would never be an Osaka Summer Campaign after experiencing the Osaka Winter Campaign. They will only come to appreciate Mao Zedongās wisdom: āprioritise people over land, and you will keep both; prioritise land over people, and you will lose both.ā The movement will enter a new phase of Long March.

(21 Feb) During my trip at Poland, I was impressed at a meeting with some Hong Kong students who were studying at Poland. It was found a local powerful and sizable Vietnam syndicates fully supported the protest of Anti-extradition Bill held by Hongkongers at Poland, the local PRC students thus dared not to create disturbance. Such support was because the Vietnamese would like to thank Hong Kong for receiving Vietnamese refugees and eligible Vietnamese migrants years ago. Learning international relationship is so practicable!
