In the face of “National Security Law” and “gathering ban”,the June 4 Vigil, held annually in the memory of victims of Tiananmen Square Massacre, was banned this year, making it the first time it has been banned in 30 years.

The Hong Kong Alliance, in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China called on the public to uphold the “candle-lit” tradition, including those pro-democracy protesters currently being detained for participating in anti-ELAB activities.

An informal gathering was arranged this evening (June 3) outside of the Lai Chi Kok Detention Centre for supporters to mourn and pay tribute to the Massacre victims.

Tomorrow marks the 31st anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre. With the currently enforced gathering ban and the sceptre of the National Security Law continuously looming over the city, the annual June 4 vigil was banned by the police this year.

Despite the ban, netizens called on the public to uphold the "candle-lit" tradition with those detained in Lai Chi Kok Detention Centre today.

Koo Sze Yiu, a social activist and friend of “Long Hair” Leung Kwok Hung, could be seen commemorating the massacre near the detention centre.

Other citizens have also arrived to commemorate the massacre, holding signs such as "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" and "I'll only quit if I die".
