China cries foul after 60 countries congratulate Taiwan's President Tsai on re-election
Taiwan held her presidential election and legislative elections on 11 Jan. Tsai Ing-wen and her running mate William Lai won the race to be the president and vice president respectively. Their Kuomintang opponents Han Kuo-yu and Simon Chang received almost 3 million fewer votes than the winner. The incumbent president got congratulations from over 60 countries then.
This has hit the nerve of the Chinese government. The Foreign Ministry Spokesman of Communist China Geng Shuang said that the presidential election of Taiwan was a "sub-national affair in China". The Chinese government firmly opposed those countries who violated the 'one-China' principle'. Geng warned the countries should deal with Taiwan-related issues cautiously so that the "Taiwan independence forces" would not get wrong messages.
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Ma Xiaoguang repeated the line of “one country, two systems” and claimed that peaceful cross-strait relations would be the most beneficial development of both countries.
