Low Turnout at The Lunar New Year Fair Held in Victoria Park, Stark Contrast To Fairs In The Past

#FirstHand

The Lunar New Year Fair has always been one of the most popular events for the Hong Kong people during this time of the year. In the past, Victoria Park would be teeming with people who would wait hours just to get into the venue.

The atmosphere for this year's fair pales in comparison to those of the past. This is seen in the unusually low turnout. After the Hong Kong government announced a ban on dry goods and political satire items at Lunar New Year Fairs this year, popular items such as dolls, key chains, bags, T-shirts, accessories and decorations in relate to current affairs can be barely found. Stalls are only allowed to sell flowers and food. In addition, officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department conduct frequent checks on the items sold in stalls, warning stalls selling dry goods that they were violating the rules.

Amidst the dreary atmosphere, we found a yellow shop in the fair named “49 Blossom Everywhere” that expressed their political stance with decorations at their stall front, displaying banner and pictures of Pepe the Frog. As compared to the other stalls selling flowers, this shop attracted more civilians to shop. Besides, students who rented the stalls still made the effort to attract civilians to buy their hand-made items despite the atmosphere.

Civil Human Rights Front has also set up a booth in Victoria Park and encourage civilians to sign the petition to object the police's pay raise. They also ask Hong Kong people continue walking with them.

The stories I wrote
All started from here;
All set off from here.

In my vague memory,
We met a year ago because of our passion,
and also because of our persistence.

A year later,
I don't know what else I can trust.
I've suffered a lot of attacks,
I've suffered a lot of injuries.

However, should I give up?
For everything we've lost,
Can that be backtracked?
We've no way to retreat.

I would rather do it all in vain,
Than watch and do nothing.
