China accuses Danish politicians in feud over Hong Kong

Ted Hui, exiled Hong Kong lawmaker and pro-democracy activist, visited Denmark on Tuesday, December 1st at the invitation of Danish lawmakers. Chinese officials said the Danish politicians violated the “basic norms governing international relations” and that their decision “damages Denmark’s image as a country that has always emphasized the rule of law.”

Hui will soon move to Britain, which has extended residency rights for up to 3 million Hong Kong holders of British National Overseas (BNO) passports, allowing them to live and work there for five years and eventually obtain citizenship. In response to this new immigration policy, Hua Chunying stated “China will consider no longer recognizing BNO passports as valid travel documents, and we reserve the right to take further measures.”

She also made China’s position clear in a briefing in response to Hui’s arrival in Denmark. “We oppose any individual, organization or country interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs, meddling in Hong Kong’s judicial sovereignty and harboring Hong Kong criminals in any way.”

Hong Kong: China limits parliament to 'patriots'

China has passed sweeping changes to Hong Kong's electoral rules which will tighten its control over the city. The number of directly elected seats in parliament has been cut almost by half, and prospective MPs will first be vetted by a pro-Beijing committee to ensure their loyalty to the mainland.

All prospective LegCo candidates will now have to go through two rounds of vetting before they can run, by the powerful pro-Beijing Election Committee as well as by a new screening committee. Carrie Lam said that will include background checks by the police and national security department.

Only 'true patriots' need apply: Beijing's tough new laws turn Hong Kong's elections into selections

Beijing's new election rules give the central government sweeping powers to eliminate those considered disloyal and tip votes in the CCP’s favour even before a single ballot is cast.

The new electoral system slashes democratic representation in Hong Kong's local legislature by sharply cutting the number and proportion of seats directly chosen by voters. It also gives greater power to appointed political bodies loyal to China's central government.

"All our freedoms faded [at] a drastic speed that none of us could have expected," Law said in a Skype interview with CBC News from London, where he now lives. He counted off the  rights lost on his fingers: "freedom of speech, of association and assembly, and now elections, all gone."
