In Memory of Yellow Raincoat Man
1930 | Admiralty
Today is the birthday of 'yellow raincoat man' Leung Ling-kit. He pleaded with fellow Hongkongers to protest against the extradition bill and the erosion of freedom, before falling from height on June 15 at Pacific Place.

Leung's fatal fall marks the first death in Hong Kong's pro-demoracy movement since 2019 June, shocking but also waking up many people of Hong Kong.

On his birthday today, citizens carrying white flowers gathered even before the start of the memorial. Some stood in silemce, some sang "Hallelujah to the Lord" while some chanted slogans.

"Hongkongers, Don't Forget Our Cause"

A man displayed a placard that read: "If functional constituency is a 'way out'...is a man's life a joke to you? Hongkongers, Don't Forget Our Cause."

[Editor's note: As the Legislative Coouncil will take place later this year, discussion and debates concerning whether there is a chance to bring pro-democracy voice into the legislature, provided that the current indirect election mechanism and the government's slanted measures have always ensured pro-Beijing faction to be the majority.]

“I am lost in Hong Kong”:
#YellowRaincoatMan

On May 10, 2021, the Coroner’s Court in Hong Kong has opened the inquest into the death of “yellow raincoat man” #MarcoLeung Ling-kit, the first martyred Hong Kong protestor, who on June 15, 2019, fell from a scaffolding at Pacific Place mall in Admiralty after unfurling a banner with the Five Demands of the protests.

Leung’s parents were absent from court.

Inside the court room, the personal belongings of Leung were exhibited. These include a banner that read "Fully withdraw extradition to China, we are not rioters" and his famous yellow poncho displaying the line "Carrie Lam kills Hong Kong, Corrupt Cop is Coldblooded".
Apart from these, there is also a black T-shirt with the words “I am lost in Hong Kong” and a notebook where he wrote “I am frustrated by this Hong Kong.”

A clip of the incident was shown in court, in which Democrat Roy Kwong and other citizens tried to persuade Leung not to commit suicide. “Walk back!” “We still have tomorrow. Let’s march together tomorrow!”

Macro Leung died on June 15, 2019, a day before a march which sees 2 million Hongkongers taking to the street, the largest the city has ever witnessed. He has since become an icon in Hong Kong’s resistance movement.

25 months since the Passing of #YellowRaincoatMan

A sign that appeared on July 15, 2021 in Admiralty, Hong Kong reads: “If we give up now, our friends who had passed away would not forgive us.”

#MarcoLeung, the Yellow Raincoat Man, fell from a shopping mall on June 15, 2019, calling on fellow Hongkongers to resist the erosion of rights and freedom and the suppression by authorities. The next day, 2 million Hongkongers took it to the street to voice support for the 5 demands, which include the withdrawal of extradition to China and the implementation of duo universal suffrage in Hong Kong.

Two years went by, the situation in Hong Kong has only worsened with the authorities' continuous crackdown on civil society, journalists and any pro-democracy civilian including students and teachers.

On July 15, 2021, police filled the site where a memorial of the yellow raincoat man takes place every month among pro-democracy Hongkongers.

Two years seven months since passing of pro-democracy martyr Marco Leung Ling-kit

On June 15, 2019, #MarcoLeung fell to his death from a shopping mall, #PacificPlace, a week after a one million-strong demonstration failed to convince the city's leadership to withdraw the extradition bill.

Leung was wearing a yellow raincoat that wrote "Carrie Lam killed Hong Kong, Cops were cold blooded."

Leung was the first pro-democracy Hongkonger to die in the anti-extradition law amendment bill movement in 2019.

After Leung's death, his yellow raincoat became a symbol of resistance in the fight for freedom.
