Former Director of HK Observatory Refuses to be Government's Collaborator
In mid-2018, former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Lam Chiu-yin took up the Convenor position for the Support group on Long-team Decarbonization Strategy group of Hong Kong Sustainability Committee, responsible for public consultation of the Strategy.
In mid-November 2020, the committee announced result of public consultation and related recommendations. Lam, however, didn’t attend the announcement event. He posted on social media that he has resigned from the position in September.
He told reporters that in this “unfinished two-year tenure”, he found that the government did not want to listen to public opinion. Lam said, “some members of concerning authority do not take public consultation seriously. They use the Support Group to back up government views. I do not want to be involved in the muddle.”
Lam, therefore, decided not to take up any public position in the future.

China app Developer Expected to Lose HKD 7.8M Investment Money in India and Stated that the Chinese government Could Not Help
The Indian government banned 43 mobile device programs for the national security reason last week, including various apps under China Alibaba. Until now, it has already suspended a total of 267 apps developed in China. Li Jialun, the boss of China Technology Company Club Factory, indicated that he has already accepted the destiny of being ruled out in the Indian market. And he expected that there are heavy investment losses, and has adjusted the development focus to Europe and the United States.
Club Factory is selling low-cost fashion and household products. According to the report from England Financial Times, Li raised US$100 million (HKD 780 million) from the investors to enter the Indian market last year. At that time, Club Factory was at the top of India download ranking and expected to be profitable. He indicated that he could see more opportunities in India than in the crowded market in China.
Li does not know when the Club Factory can resume operations, but he will certainly lose most of the investment. He indicated that the uncertain prospects for several months had frustrated business. “If consumers cannot see you in a long period, they will never come back.” Li also said that the Chinese government could not help at all.

WTO complaint “next step” in tariff dispute between Australia and China, trade ministery says.
The trade minister Simon Brimingham said on 29 November the trade conflicts were not just harming Australia but threated global trade confidence. Canberra will take its complaints to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Due wine tariffs imposed after barley tariffs announced in May, at least 60 ships laden with coal from Australian producers have also been denied permission to enter Chinese ports, leaving them waiting off the coast while Australian authorise attempt to find a resolution to the standoff.
The wine decision would not be part of any immediate complaint to the WTO as it was still being described as an “interim application of tariffs”.

A year after Wuhan alarm, China seeks to change Covid origin story
China's state media People’s Daily claimed in a Facebook post in November 2020 that “all available evidence suggests that the coronavirus did not start in central China’s Wuhan”.
Chinese scientists have submitted a paper for publication to the Lancet – although it has not yet been peer-reviewed – that claims “Wuhan is not the place where human-to-human Sars-CoV-2 transmission first happened”, suggesting instead that the first case may have been in the “Indian subcontinent”.
Claims that the virus had orgins outside China are given very little credence by western scientists. Michael Ryan, director of the health emergencies programme at the World Health Organization (WHO), said last week that it would be “highly speculative” to argue that the disease did not emerge in China.

New Law in France Criticised for Harming Press Freedom, with Protest Leading to Conflicts, 20 Officers Injured and 46 Arrests
46 thousand people took to the streets of Paris, France, in protest against the new security law for damaging press freedom and offering excessive protection to the police force. The protest triggered clashes between civilians and the police. Police dispersed protestors with tear gas and water cannons while protestors threw stones, glass bottles, etc. The police said that more than 20 officers were injured and 46 arrests were made. The Prime Minister of France Jean Castex announced the establishment of an independent commission to review and redraft the new security law.
The new security law stipulated that anyone that takes photos or videos of the police maliciously are in violation of the law. Oppositions to the law criticised it as damaging to press freedom, which enables the documentation of police brutality. One of the triggers to the protest was a black music producer named Michel Zecler. Zecler was on his way to his studio on Saturday late evening (Nov 21) when he was brutally shoved into his studio and assaulted by three police officers emerging from their police vehicle, who suspected him of violating the pandemic rules requiring the wearing of face mask in public. After Zecler was severely injured and called for help, three colleagues from upstairs came to thrust the officers out of the studio. Zecler said that while he was assaulted, he heard insults of racist slurs directed at him. The whole process was captured by closed-circuit television. President of France Emmanuel Macron called the event unacceptable and shameful and had ordered the police to promptly submit a report on how to restore confidence in the police force and improve relations between the police and the public. The three officers involved have been suspended for investigation.

Australia's Trade Minister: China's trade 'autocracy' hurts Australia, hinders global economic recovery
Although Australia has just signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) with China that seeks to achieve zero tariffs on each other, China has imposed tariffs of up to 212% on Australian wine imports yesterday (28 November). In the face of China's continued trade pressure, Australia's Trade Minister Simon Birmingham criticized China's "dictatorship" in trade, which not only affects Australian businesses, but also hinders the recovery of the global economy from the epidemic. Birmingham said he is prepared to escalate the dispute to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for settlement.
In a television appearance on Sunday (29 November), Birmingham stressed that even though Australia welcomes China's growing economy, he criticized China for becoming overconfident, “what we want to see is that confidence turning for the better, and working with other countries to be able to work together to drive the global economy, rather than being an isolated economic pressure cooker. These actions not only hurt Australian businesses ... but also undermine confidence in the global economy. It also damages the confidence in the global economy, which is not detrimental to the world's recovery from the pandemic.”

After One Year of Detention, Prosecution Documents Are Still Not Ready
As of November 2021, most of the "47 democrats" in Hong Kong have been detained for 8 months after being arrested for "conspiring to subvert state power" under the #NationalSecurityLaw (#NSL). They were charged over the #PrimaryElection which was held on July 11 and 12, 2020.
On November 29, 2021, a trial took place at the West-Kowloon Magistrates' Court in Hong Kong.
The defence informed the magistrate about their intention of confessing their accusation.
One of the defendants told the magistrate #LawTakChuenPeter that he has dismissed his legal aid counsel and would defend himself. He also made a complaint about the prosecutor who failed to provide him with the relevant documents about his case.
During the trial, most of the time was spent in reporting the progress of translation and document verification. Likewise, most debates are about the document preparation progress of the prosecution and the time they have spent, considering that the defendants have been detained for nearly one year.
After the tug-of-war between the defence and the prosecution, the magistrate asked the Chief Prosecutor #LoTinWaiAndy to set up a timeline and submit their documents accordingly.
The court proposed the next trial date, Feb 8, 2022, for some defendants tentatively. However, the timetable of tge prosecutor was yet to be confirmed.
In the next hour in court, the defence and the prosecution had disputes over the time when documents related to "summary of facts" and the "allegations" would be completed. They both had a different timeframe in mind.
While some defendants would be mentioned Feb 8, 2022, all of them will be presented in court in March 4, 2022. This means the democrats would have been detained for more than a year when the next trial takes place.
