Morocco authorities arrest Uyghur activist at China’s request

Moroccan authorities have arrested a Uyghur activist in exile because of a Chinese terrorism warrant distributed by Interpol, according to information from Moroccan police and a rights group that tracks people detained by China.

Activists fear Yidiresi Aishan will be extradited to China and say the arrest is politically driven as part of a broader Chinese campaign to hunt down perceived dissidents outside its borders.

Morocco’s national security directorate said on Tuesday that a Chinese citizen was arrested after landing at Mohammed V international airport in Casablanca on 20 July, upon arrival from Istanbul.

National Security Police Raids June 4 Museum in Hong Kong, Damaging Exhibits and Locking Out Owner

On September 9, 2021, the national security police in Hong Kong raided the already-closed June 4 museum in Mong Kok.

This is followed by the arrest of four core members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.

Police carried off display boards, the museum's logo, material showing #XiJinping and #MaoZedong, 39 boxes of books, as well as other items, and took them away in a truck. Some exhibition panels were damaged in the process.

When a former member went to examine the museum site after the raid, he found that the security camera had been removed, and electric cable were damaged. The door lock had also been changed, and he could not enter the museum. On the gate, the national security police left a handwritten note: "'contact the Mongkok Police Station".

The Alliance had been the organizer of the annual June 4 candlelight vigil since 1990. The event as well as the museum aimed to remember the Tiananmen Massacre by the Chinese Communist Party on June 4, 1989.

Next Digital Directors Resign to Protect Staff: "When the freedom of expression has been eroded, no rights can be guaranteed"

#NextDigital is the parent company of #AppleDaily, a pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong that has been forced to shut down by the authorities in June 2021.

In the past few months, the Hong Kong police arrested the executives, editors and writers of Apple Daily; and charged the company's former CEO Cheung Kim-hung and Apple Daily editor-in-chief Ryan Law of breaching national security.

On Sunday, September 5, 2021, all four directors of Next Digital including chairman Ip Yut Kin announced their resignation in order to protect shareholders, creditors, employees and former employees.

In the statement, the directors pointed out that an orderly liquidation would serve the best interests of shareholders, creditors, staff and other stakeholders. Since the Hong Kong government has frozen Next Digital assets, the company cannot even pay the salary of their newspaper staff.

The latest statement of Next Digital also pointed out that "the Hong Kong government has never indicated which articles published by Apple Daily allegedly violated the National Security Law."

Next Digital condemned the government for spreading white terror, "This uncertainty created a climate of fear, resulting in many resignations among the remaining staff at the company in Hong Kong."

In closing the statement, the directors thanked all Apple Daily readers for not just their support, but also sharing their values and beliefs.

"You entrusted us with the work of journalism. You know well the free flow of information is key to a free society and a free market."

The statement also warned solemnly, "When the freedom of expression has eroded away, no rights can be guaranteed."

Hong Kong Alliance Chairpersons Charged with "Inciting Subversion of State"

On September 10, 2021, the Department of Justice (#DoJ) in Hong Kong laid charges of "Inciting subversion of state power" against the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, as well as its chairperson #LeeCheukYan, and co-chairs #AlbertHo and #ChowHangTung.

The Alliance was informed of the charges via the Hong Kong police, whose National Security department had yesterday carried off a large number of items from the Alliance's June 4 museum as evidence.

The case was brought to court on September 10, 2021. The court denied Chow's application for bail, while Lee and Ho have been detained for long under other charges relating to the pro-democracy movement.

[Editor's note: The same charge of "inciting subversion" were used by China against activists of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, which the Alliance commemorated in a candlelight vigil every year. It had not been applicable to Hong Kong until the introduction of the #NationalSecurityLaw in 2020.]

Uyghur Man Draws 15-Year Prison Term for Contacting Uncles Overseas

A Uyghur man living in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) was sent to an internment camp four years ago for the crime of speaking to relatives overseas, contradicting Chinese claims that Uyghur residents of the region are free to keep in touch with family members abroad, RFA has learned.

Eli Juma, a resident of the No. 5 Village of Imamlirim township in Aksu (in Chinese, Akesu) prefecture’s Uchturpan (Wushi) county, was detained and sent to a camp in early 2017 for speaking to his uncles Jelil Juma and Helil Juma, both of them living outside China, three years before.

“Yes, he was in contact with his uncles, in contact with his relatives,” a village police officer in Uchturpan confirmed to RFA in a recent interview. “He spoke to them on the phone. I believe it was in 2014,” the officer added, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Newly married pro-democracy activist faces imprisonment for the fourth time, Wong Ho-Ming: will give birth to three after that

The former chairman of the League of Social Democrats Raphael Wong Ho-Ming and other six persons were charged with organizing and taking part in unauthorized assembly on 20 October 2019. Wong was sentenced to 14 months in prison.

Being the only person that outside the wall in the case, Wong interviewed by inmedia.net before going to prison for his fourth time. Wong said, “after getting out from prison, I would try my best to “make men”, I want to have three and my wife wants to have two”.

Wong claimed that “I am insane”, he believes and hopes each democratic family shall give birth to at least three. One of them will participate in the struggle and bear the price of imprisonment, and the other two would take the responsibility of looking after the family.

[Editor’s Note: The term “making men” in Cantonese may have two distinct meanings, one literally meaning “to produce young” and a metaphoric meaning of “being the person you are supposed to be in society”.]

Independent English bookshop in Hong Kong Closes as Owner Leaves the City

In Hong Kong, the independent English bookshop, Bleak House Books (清明堂) will be closed in mid-October, 2021. The co-founder Albert King-ho Wan announced on Sunday, August 29, 2021.

Wan and his family will be leaving Hong Kong in the near future. Wan wrote in the blog of the bookstore, "the backdrop to these developments is, of course, politics".

Albert Wan was born in the 1970s in the United States and grew up there until he moved back to Hong Kong with his family in 2016. Previously a lawyer, Albert Wan started #BleakHouseBooks in early 2018 in San Po Kong, Kowloon.

Bleak House Books mainly sells vintage English books and comics and has become popular among readers over time. The bookshop also held talks for readers to exchange reflections.

Albert Wan said that the bookshop will be closed on October 15, 2021. Wan explained that his family’s daily lives are not overtly political, "but as George Orwell once remarked, in our age there is no such thing as 'keeping out of politics. All issues are political issues."

The closure is a decision made with great sadness, said Wan. He added that given the state of politics in Hong Kong, "My wife and I can no longer see a life for ourselves and our children in this city, at least in the near future."
