Another 12-year-old Journalist Harassed by Hong Kong Police

On Mother’s Day in May this year, a 12-year-old student reporter from Student Depth Media was arrested while covering a protest event in Tsim Sha Tsui. A month later, another 12-year-old student reporter from Heung Shing Daily was taken away from the protest site in Yoho Mall to Yuen Long Police Station for unknown reasons. He was released later that evening at 8pm.

In an interview, the student reporter claimed that he was walking behind police cordon line through a fire door when he was suddenly intercepted. One of the officers threatened to charge him with theft for failing to explain the origin of the items he possesses. However, he was eventually released without any charge. He believed the legitimacy of student reporters covering news on the protests. However, he also reminded fellow student reporters to be wary. He further added that he may no longer be present at protest sites to cover the news in near future.

Police later disclosed that the student reporter was taken away because he was regarded as a minor, being under the age of 15. They also claimed that the institution that he was volunteering with was not registered.

The New Origin of Hong Kong's Dragon Boat Festival

Editor's Note:
Tuen Ng Festival (also known as Dragon Boat Festival) is tradition Chinese Festival held in remembrance of a well respected scholar, Wat Yuen, who threw himself into the river in a bid to awaken the emperor who was misguided by corrupted officials. After learning of his death, people threw rice dumpling in waters to feed the fishes and prevent them from eating Wat's body, in hopes that the corpse would be kept intact.

The author of this Facebook post put a new meaning to the festival, connecting it with Hongkongers’ fight for democracy, protesters' sacrifice, as well as the polices' brutality.

Since the anti-ELAB movement last year, many bizarre suicide cases concerning protesters have been reported, including bodies of young protesters found floating in the sea. Although, many of these cases were deemed suspicious, the police usually disagree in an attempt to sweep the truth of their deaths under the carpet.

Every May 5 on Chinese Lunar Calendar, Hongkongers will walk along the sea shores to lay sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leave as food for fish, hoping that the fishes in the sea will not eat the bodies of these unknown protesters, calling this very day the Tuen Ng Festival.

Two more ministers with a police background in Hong Kong; Pro-China lawmaker: "I don’t think there’s any problem with a police state"

On June 25, 2021, the Hong Kong SAR government announced personnel change in the top adminstration, where at least two more officials with law enforcement backgrounds will take up key senior positions.

The current Secretary for Security #JohnLee has been appointed as the new chief secretary. He is the city's first top minister with a police background.

Police Commissioner #ChrisTang will become the Secretary for Security. One of his deputies, #RaymondSiu, is promoted to the police chief.

The personnel change was announced by Chief Executive Carrie Lam in Hong Kong and officiated by the State Ministry of the PRC in Beijing.

The "promotion" has stirred up discontent among the public. Many deemed it as a blatant manifestation of a "police state" in Hong Kong.

However, pro-Beijing lawmaker Alice Mak, of the Federation of Trade Unions, said, "If it’s a police state, why not? I don’t think there’s any problem with a police state."

The government's announcement came one day after the police and the Security Bureau had cracked down the city's pro-democracy newspaper #AppleDaily, by forcing the newspaper and related magazine under #NextDigital to close down on June 24, 2021. The police arrested and charged several editors, news commentators and executives under the #NationalSecurityLaw, while the Security Bureau froze the assets of the newspaper and three related companies.
