Over 1.7 Million Hongkongers Take Part in 8.18 "Be Water" Rally in 2019

On Sunday, August 28, 2019, over 1.7 million Hongkongers took to the streets to oppose the impending encroachment of rights and freedom in the government's attempt to establish an extradition treaty with China.

Hongkongers defied the police's objection to the march by gathering in Victoria Park, peacefully walking to Central, demonstrating their entitled rights of expression and protest.

Despite the pouring rain, Hongkongers made their steps forward standing by each other. Withstanding the rain, the congestion and hypothermia, Hongkongers formed a sea of umbrellas, peacefully and with civility, showing the world their determination to pursue the 5 demands and their ideal 'Hong Kong'.

Be like water - The striking resemblance and common languages for mass protests

Editor’s Note: If you have paid attention to the protests in Belarus, you will not be surprised to see that protestors are dressing alike, wearing helmet or gas mask and carrying umbrella, as the BLM protestors in the US or the Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong. Not only that, the new tactic “Be Water”, meaning 'great flexibility and agility for the mind and body', also becomes a common motto among protestors to resist and reorganize themselves during various clashes with the brutal forces. Such tactic comes from Bruce Lee and was adapted by Hong Kong protestors in 2019.

Similar infographic posters like the one above are circulated on Belarus TG channel, depicting common gears and tools for protestors around the world.

Hong Kong’s Blueprint Changes Protests Around the World

//Social dissent these days has a new catchphrase: “Be Water”. Inspired by a quote from martial arts icon Bruce Lee, the phrase was repurposed by Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement during their campaign against the 2019 extradition bill. The concept calls for movements to take on an amorphous, leaderless and fast-flowing approach.

Thanks to live-streaming on social media, demonstrators share vital information – such as the whereabouts of police – to avoid a crackdown. The strategy was tested in Hong Kong and soon implemented halfway across the world by Catalan demonstrators, determined to defend the region’s freedoms from the central Spanish government...

“Shapeless” and “leaderless” are quickly becoming the new keywords for social movements. And it looks like there cannot be one without the other. Not only is lack of leadership essential to fluidity (protesters cannot just assemble and split if they are following someone’s directives), but it also allows movements to avoid government crackdowns.

As Hong Kong-based journalist Anthony Dapiran has observed, “With no obvious leader, there’s no one to imprison.” Even Black Lives Matter, despite the heritage of civil rights leaders as charismatic as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, is now taking a leaderless approach to social action.//

Agnes Chow Mentioned in the Entrance Exam of a Prestigious Japanese Junior High schoo

Recently, many private junior high schools in Japan are holding entrance exams. An exam question at the Seiko Gakuin Junior & Senior High School, a prestigious school in Yokohama, sparked discussions between netizens in Hong Kong and Japan because the question mentioned Agnes Chow, the National Security Law and Keyakizaka46’s song “Fukyōwaon”.

The question appeared in the Social Studies paper, where an Asahi Shimbun newspaper article published on August 2020 was chosen and the candidates needed to answer questions accordingly. The article narrates how Agnes Chow was arrested and released, and the fact that she mentioned the song “Fukyōwaon” (means discordant sound) kept coming to her mind when she was held in custody, making her determined to protect her home. This article has attracted a lot of attention at that time.

Apart from asking where it happened and who was involved in the exam question, it also mentioned “be water”, one of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement slogan, quoting Xunzi (a Chinese Confucian philosopher) on his saying “water can carry a boat, but it can also overturn a boat”, subsequently asking the student candidate to define the meaning of “water”. The fourth question asked the candidates to answer in one sentence how they have experienced having denied their freedom. The last question linked Agnes’s arrest to Article 21 of the Japanese Constitution and asked the candidate to fill in what freedom is protected under this law.
