Pro-Democracy Activists in Hong Kong Face #PoliticalPersecution

On Jan 6, 2021, the Hong Kong police arrested 55 pro-democracy figures in Hong Kong, accusing them of "subverting state power" for running a primary election in the pro-democracy camp.

As part of the bail condition, they were supposed to report to the police in April; however, on Feb 26, 2021, they received calls from the Hong Kong police, demanding them to show up at the police station 2 days later on Sunday, Feb 28, which is over 1 month ahead of the scheduled date.

The police refused to disclose whether arrests would be made.

Many activists had prepared for the worst and extended gratitude to their family, friends and supporters for their love and care all along.

#PowerforDemocracy Disbanded in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, Power for Democracy announced its immediate disbandment on Feb 27, 2021.

Set up in 2002, the group has coordinated the district council elections in 2019 and the pro-democracy camp’s #LegCo primaries in 2020.

In Jan 2021, the Hong Kong authorities arrested over 50 poltical figures for participating in the primaries and "vioating the #NationalSecurityLaw".

In a statement, convenor and district councillor #AndrewChiu said the decision was made regarding “the latest development in the situation of Hong Kong under the 'new political era'.”

Chiu said the group has now stopped running, but members will continue to serve Hong Kong people.

Biden Reportedly Adds “Asia tsar” position, Appointing an Eagle Party China expert who Called on Indo-Pacific Allies to join Forces Against China

Financial Times quoted resources saying that US President-elect Biden will nominate foreign policy expert Kurt Campbell for a new position deemed “Asia tsar”. Campbell is regarded as a hawk in China policy. He explained how China destabilized the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, and how the United States should work with countries in the region to respond in an article in Foreign Affairs on January 12. Regarding Taiwan policy, Campbell and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen are friends, expecting that he will benefit Taiwan in the cross-strait situation after taking office.

Three sources stated to Financial Times that Biden will soon announce the news about the nomination of Kurt Campbell. The main mission of the new position of “Asia tsar” is to face the challenge from China. The report said that Biden will face a series of China-related issues after taking office on January 20, including how to respond to Beijing's suppression of Hong Kong democracy protest, and deciding whether to keep retaining the Trump administration’s tough policy towards China. Biden reportedly understands that China's issues are not just related to diplomacy, national defence and economic, but also related to many departments. Therefore, it is necessary to hire an expert who is familiar with Asian affairs to integrate China policies of various departments of the US government.

The photos captured moments before Hong Kong pro-democracy activist #LesterShum arrived at the Police Station on Feb 28, 2021. Shum had been become known as a student activist during the 2014 Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. Currently, he is a district councillor of the Tsuen Wan District in Hong Kong and is likely to lose his seat while facing political persecution and oppression.

The 27-year-old Shum went hand in hand with his newly-wedded wife to the police station. He talked to the media calmly before heading in to face the unknown.

Shum said in 2019 he had made his decision to fight on, regardless of what might happen. He hoped like himself, Hongkongers would not surrender to the authoritarian regime.

Shum was among those 55 pro-democracy figures arrested by the police on Jan 5, 2021 for their involvement in the pro-democracy camp's primary elections in July 2020.

2 days ago, on Feb 26, they had been ordered by the police to report to the police station on Sunday, Feb 28 ahead of the scheduled date in April. Many suspected that detention and charges would be made.

The Hong Kong Police announced on Jan 28, 2021 that 47 people are charged with "conspiracy to subvert state powers" under the #NationalSecurityLaw.

The large group of pro-democracy politicians and activists include district councilor Lester Shum (see photos); 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung and Jimmy Sham of Social Democrats; activist Ventus Lau; former law professor Benny Tai.

The police said they would detain them overnight and the case will be mentioned in the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court the next day on March 1, 2021.

"In face of the worsening situation, I want to tell Hongkongers, in Hong Kong or abroad, that we've decided to not surrender to the authoritarian regime since 2019. I hope we can all carry this in our heart and continue with this road despite the adversities we face."

On Feb 28, 2021 in Hong Kong, pro-democracy students and hospital workers held a street booth in Mongkok, to call for Hongkongers to boycott the government's "#LeaveHomeSafe" mobile app, rejecting the regime's surveillance and tracking. They also call on Hongkongers to resist to the end.

The booth is held by #StudentPoliticism together with Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA).

In addition to calling for the boycott of the tracking app, they also call attention to the police's political persecution of the participants in the "35+" pro-democracy primary elections in 2020.

On Feb 28, 2021, the police announced that the arrestees are charged for sedition under the National Security Law, and will be brought to court on the morning of the next day on March 1.

Spokesperson of Student Politicism Wong Yat-Chin encouraged citizens to attend the court hearing to show support for the pro-democracy camp.

In Mongkok, thd police deployed over 30 officers to surround the small street booth; at one point, the officers occupied two-thirds of the pedestrian walkway. They left after recording personal details of the activists, and warned them not to be too loud.

In less than an hour later, the police hoisted the "#purpleflag" warning civilians in the area of potentially "violating the #NationalSecurityLaw".
