Granny Wong: Truth of 721 incident will eventually be divulged

Granny Wong was sighted in Yuen Long West Rail Station braving the grip of National Security Law and enforcement of social distancing restrictions in Hong Kong. Despite her old age, Granny Wong displayed of her behaviour, courage and defiance to fight on for democracy and freedom.

Pointing at a movie poster that read “Lie”, Wong wanted Hongkongers to remain hopeful that “lies will be burst eventually like balloons being popped.”

On the evening of 21 July 2019, a large group of white-clad mobsters, allegedly linked to triads, indiscriminately attacked pro-democracy protesters on their way home on a West Rail train with steel rods and rattan canes. At least 45 people were severely injured, including the elderly, children, journalists and lawmakers. Hong Kong Police, suspected of colluding with the white-clad mobsters, has then been criticised for their inaction in the incident amid the attack of innocent civilians.

However, Hong Kong police were attempting to re-write the history as recounting the clashes as "between two evenly-matched rivals" and denied that they were slow to respond.

"Winter Solstice With You": District Councillor Spreads Christmas Cheer at Street Booth

Tonight is winter solstice, traditionally a night of dinner and gathering with family and friends. With the epidemic, however, it is not so feasible to go out and celebrate the solstice, or the coming Christmas neither. With so much disheartening news of Hongkongers facing political persecution in the city, and even in China - as in the case of #Save12HKYouths - many in the city find themselves with little Christmas joy this year.

Tonight, Mongkok North District Councillor Siu Tak-kin set up a street-side Christmas display, with a 4-meter Christmas tree and a 2-meter-tall snowman figure. Many citizens passing by posed for Christmas photos. Siu's district council team had originally ordered wall calendars to be handed out to citizens, but the shipment was detained in China. Instead, Siu's team printed new calendar posters, and handed them out to passing citizens.

They also set up a table for "Christmas cards for 12 HKers", where citizens could write their thoughts to the 12 detained Hongkongers. Siu will later mail them to the 12's detention center in Shenzhen.

Defendant Was Charged with Conspiracy to Commit A Riot for Having A Similar Name To The Tenant's

Hong Kong police arrested 6 men and women on October 1, 2019 after they found camp fuel and shredded cloth inside a flat in Causeway Bay.

The 6 civilians were charged with" conspiracy to commit a riot". A “no case to answer” submission (also known as “half-time” submission) was made at the District Court on Dec 17, 2020

The defence claimed that the prosecution failed to prove the existence of an agreement between the defendants. The barrister pointed out that the name of the tenant does not match the name of the defendant, and there is no item in the unit that belongs to the defendant. Thus, they decided to make a submission of “no case to answer”, requesting that the defendants do not have to plead.

The prosecution argued that the name of the tenant was similar to that of the defendant but agreed that there was no evidence of the defendant’s involvement in the case other than the fact that he has been filmed on surveillance footage once, on the floor in question.

HK Gov't's Proposes to Allow Immigration Officers to Carry Arms

In order to expedite the screening procedures for non-refoulement claims, the Hong Komg SAR government proposes to amend its immigration ordinance.

However, the Amendment Bill is accused of violating human rights as it proposes to authorize the Immigration Department to determine the language used by the claimants, and to compel the claimants to undergo medical examination.

The HKSAR government also proposes to amend the "Weapons Ordinance" and the "Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance", to authorize the Immigration Department officers to carry arms without applying to the Police Force, including the riot guns staffed by the officers at Castle Peak Bay Immigration Center, and the steel batons to be equipped in the future.

The Security Bureau stated that the amendments help to maintain the consistency between the Immigration Department and the other disciplined forces, allow more flexibility in the deployment of manpower and ability to conduct training on its own, thereby enhancing its ability to respond to emergencies and conduct law enforcement operations.

#Ombudsman: Inmate-made Masks Disposed of By HKSAR Government Are Resold

According to the Office of Ombudsman, the government-owned CSI face masks manufactured by inmates in Hong Kong on the market could be the ones discarded by government's departments. The office claimed that no large-scale outflow was seen.

The Office of Ombudsman announced the investigation report on the usage arrangement of the production of CSI face masks by the Hong Kong Correctional Services on 17 December, 2020.

Somd of the CSI face masks sold in the market could possibly be those expired or discarded. The report says there is no evidence showing these face masks are outflowing to the market "systematically" or in a large scale.

In addition, the Office of Ombudsman discovered that in the past, non-governmental organizations can easily purchase face mask from the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department but the department haven’t been regulating these organizations on the usage of the face masks, including reselling or private usage until they fixed this loophole in February 2020.

The Office of Ombudsman found out from an investigation by the Customs and Excise Department of a violation of Trade Description Ordinance, there are Pharmacy owners selling CSI facemasks. The face mask packagings have the dates “09 OCT 2014” and “21 NOV 2014” printed on.

Chinese Media Allegedly Use Hongkongers to convince Chinese Mainlanders to receive China-made COVID-19 Vaccine

Since Nov 29, 2020, multiple media in China have been reporting that “close to 90% of Hongkongers hope to receive COVID-19 vaccine developed by China”.

All these articles described that the number of cases are rising again in Hong Kong for unknown reasons. According to them, on Nov 29, 2020, a group called “COVID-19 Vaccination Concern Group” held a press conference and presented results of a poll that showed 96.9% of Hong Kongers "felt confident in COVID-19 vaccines developed by China", and 88.6% would like a shot.

It was also reported that the said Concern Group was founded by Beijing loyalists such as the self-proclaimed “flag bearer” Lam Wai-man. The poll was purportedly conducted from Nov 25 to 28 through an "online platform". Among the 8,189 participants, 7,820 were "Hong Kong local citizens", and 177 were residents of the Guangdong Province in China who held Hong Kong citizenship.

#US Impose Additional #Visa Restrictions on Chinese Officials Engaged in Human Rights Abuse

//The United States on Dec 21, 2020 imposed additional visa restrictions on Chinese officials over alleged human rights abuses, taking further action against Beijing.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the restrictions affected officials believed to be responsible for or complicit in repressing religious practitioners, ethnic minority groups, dissidents and others:

“China’s authoritarian rulers impose draconian restrictions on the Chinese people’s freedoms of expression, religion or belief, association, and the right to peaceful assembly..."

On Friday, Washington added dozens of Chinese companies, including top chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp and drone manufacturer SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd, to a trade blacklist.//

China Imposes Steep Duties on Australian Wine due to "Trade Violation". Australian Says the Move Deals Major Blow on the Industries

China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) stated that its investigations had revealed that Australian wine exports breached China’s Anti-dumping Regulations, harming the local wine industry. MOFCOM would impose duties on Australian wine importers. Charges increase from 107.1% to 212.1% for the Australian wine in “containers of two litres or less”. The customs authority determined the cost.
Apart from the wine industry, other industries also suffered as a consequence of deteriorating China-Australia relations. China earlier cited “failed to meet environmental standards” as the reason to hold up 82 coal ships and 1,500 cargo crews at Chinese ports, involving AUD 1.1 billion of coal.

China-Australia relations have soured in recent years as both nations made moves at each other on the global stage. Australia has repeatedly criticized China’s human rights policies towards Hong Kong and the Xinjiang Uyghurs. Since the national security law took effect in Hong Kong in early July, Australia has also made available "safe haven" policies for Hongkongers.

The move was not the first undertaken by China to target Australian products. The New York Times editorial opined that one of the key moments that turned China-Australia relations to the worse was when the Australian government made a statement at the start of the year calling for an independent inquiry into the source of COVID-19. China has since then gradually imposed restrictions on Australian imports. The editorial described this move as reflecting a “CCP-style globalization” policy: on the one hand promoting the opening up of countries, while on the other using threats to coerce other countries to follow China’s approach in different matters.

Besides actual trade moves, China has adopted increasingly hard-line expressions in its foreign policy addresses to Australia. The Five Eyes alliance, which Australia is part of, has previously called on China to reconsider their decision on Hong Kong Legislators disqualification, and was rebuked by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian, “No matter if they have five eyes or ten eyes, if they dare harm China's sovereignty, security and development interests, they should beware of their eyes being poked and blinded”

The US, Japan and Other Allies of Taiwan Give Speech at WHA in Support of Taiwan

The World Health Assembly (WHA) has held its online conference earlier this week. The US previously urged the WHA to invite Taiwan to participate as an observer, but the appeal was rejected by the World Health Organization (WHO). Nonetheless, the US, Japan, and a number of countries with diplomatic ties with Taiwan spoke up for Taiwan during their speeches at the conference. The Central News Agency (from Taiwan) reported that during the speeches that supported Taiwan, the assembly stopped the live broadcasting twice, citing the reason that they were irrelevant to the agenda.

During the conference, Garrett Grigsby, Director of the Office of Global Affairs in the US Department of Health and Human Services, expressed that Taiwan has made impressive achievements in combatting the COVID pandemic. He said that it would be beneficial to the response to the pandemic if WHO members could understand and take reference from Taiwan’s experience. Instead, WHO’s blocking of Taiwan from participating in the conference as an observer was counterproductive. Grigsby emphasised that while each country worked to strengthen its capacity under the pandemic, countries should also share information about the pandemic and develop a transparent global architecture to detect threats early and prevent the further spreading of the virus.
