12 U.S. Universities Received Over a Billion Dollars in Anonymous Donations from China and Russia, Which Could Lead to Technology Transfer Leakage

The U.S. government has been very concerned about Chinese communist infiltration on campuses in recent years. The U.S. Department of Education has just released a survey on 12 famous U.S. universities, saying that many of them did not declare funds from China, Russia and other "hostile countries against the U.S.". The survey also indicated that the corresponding universities received US$1.14 billion in anonymous donations from countries such as China and Russia since 2012, most of which have financial ties to high-risk national security organizations, such as Huawei.

The Department of Education stated that because of the lack of transparency and supervision of the details of the donations, these foreign funds would be subject to conditions that allow foreign governments to gain access to sensitive research technologies, restrict academic freedom, and expand their soft power or publicity. The 12 universities, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT and other famous universities, are under investigation.

In fact, since last year, U.S. politicians have begun to criticize the CCP infiltration of campuses. The U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee released a cross-party report at the beginning of last year, reprimanding the CCP for conducting political propaganda on U.S. campuses through Confucius Institutes. As a result, the Department of Education stepped up its investigation of universities. At the middle of last year, they announced in the middle of last year that 12 universities involved in undeclared foreign funds of US$6.5 billion.

It is worth noting that the report specifically listed two major issues. One of them was "national security". Many universities were accused of receiving donations from Huawei for research, and some even participated in a research commissioned by Alibaba on crowd surveillance.

Hong Kong Police launch National Security Law tip-off line for only WeChat, SMS and email

Hong Kong Police have launched a hotline inviting people to report suspected breaches of the National Security Law. In posts on social media on November 5, the force stated that people can send tips anonymously by email or SMS, as well as WeChat, the only communication app allowed in China.

The hotline was reportedly set up by the police's National Security Department to accept non-emergency reports on national security matters in the form of texts, photographs, audio or video.

When news of the hotline emerged last week, the move was condemned by pro-democracy campaigners, with warnings that it would spread distrust in the SAR.

Hong Kong Police Arrests Web Media Reporter

The reporter was also arrested on this year's Mother's Day, May 10, 2020, when reporting police's operation in Mongkok. She witnessed five to six riot police tying up two girls, when she entered a public women's toilet. She held her camera, but was immediately suppressed by the police. She was wearing a reflective vest and a press card, when the police violently took away her camera, pressed her against the wall, and pepper-sprayed her face at a close distance. The police humiliated her by calling her a "corrupt reporter" and "cockroach".

Inside the toilet, the police brutally pinned the female reporter, whose body was covered with pepperspray on the ground, stepped on her back, pressed on her neck with their knee and pressured her head with a baton, who then suffered involuntary urination.

The police later on claimed that they suppressed a 26-year-old woman with an "appropriate use of force". The reporter was detained for 48 hours after the arrest on Mother's Day.

Hong Kong Police denies brutal assault of pro-democracy protesters in court hearing despite video evidence

Journalist Tam Wai-wan wrote about what she witnessed during the court hearing in Hong Kong:

"…people were shocked by the excessive amount of blood on the forehead of the 6th defendant when videos were shown in the court room.

While the police officer acknowledged that the defendant was bleeding, he claimed that he 'did not know why.'

In the live broadcast footage shown in the court, which captured how the defendant was arrested at the protest scene, it showed 5-6 riot police charging towards the defendant, aggressively hitting him with their batons.

Blatantly making claims contrary to the evidence, the police officer responsible for the arrest claimed that he was not aware of the doings of his colleagues.

When the defending lawyer asked whether he hit the defendant with a baton, causing him to bleed profusely, the officer claimed that he 'only hit his arms'..."

COVID-19 prevention kit locked up by HK authorities as “Wuhan pneumonia" is used

The Wanchai District Council approved a fund of more than HKD1,00,000 at the beginning of 2020 for a community group to produce COVID19 prevention kit.

The prevention kit, however, was reportedly detained by the Home Affairs Department (#HAD) following a complaint from pro-Beijing councilors, about the term "#WuhanPneumonia" being used in the prevention kit.

Since then, the HAD refused to release the approved fund, leaving a significant sum of HKD710,000 yet to be reimbursed to the community group.

In this regard, a group of pro-democracy members of the Wanchai District Council brought this issue to the attention of the Ombudsman's Office, criticizing that HAD’s decision to withhold the prevention kit and approved fund is to the detriment of the relationship between the District Council and local community.
