Video Investigative Report on 7.21 Yuen Long Gangster Attack Receives #SOPA Award of Excellence

"'Please Stop Beating Us’: Where Were Hong Kong’s Police?" is a video investigation originally published in 2019 by The New York Times.
It was awarded "Excellence in Video Reporting" by The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), an organization that merits best practices in professional publishing, on August 26, 2020.

The description of the video gives:
"After a violent mob attack in Hong Kong, protesters accused the police of ignoring their calls for help. We reconstruct what happened that night."

On the same day of the award presentation, the Hong Kong Police was accused of altering facts and whitewashing history. The police arrested victims of the mob attack for "riotting" and called the attack on civilians a "clash between two camps of equal force".

Documentary about Hong Kong Pro-democracy Singer Denise Ho Banned by Top Streaming Platform

On July 1, 2020, the documentary about Hong Kong pro-democracy singer Denise Ho was released but meanwhile banned by a top streaming platform. Ho expressed her disappointment but did not reveal the name of the platform. The streaming platform has business in China and this is suspected to be the reason why the documentary was censored.

Director Sue Williams found it ironic that a documentary, exploring how artists censored by China survive in the showbiz, was itself censored by China. The director also said she did not think that the film could be shown in Hong Kong theatres.

Carrie Lam Accuses Hong Kong Medical Experts With a Different Opinion on Universal Coronavirus Testing of "Harbouring Political Motivation" and "Smearing the Chinese Government"

Chief Executive Carrie Lam slammed medical experts and doctors in Hong Kong for "harbouring political motivation" by criticising the government's universal coronavirus testing scheme. Lam also accused the experts who did not support the scheme of "smearing the Chinese Government".

The chairperson of the Public Doctors’ Association Arisina Ma pointed out on a radio program that medical experts were only discussing the effectiveness of the scheme.

Dr. Wong Yam Hong, a specialist in cardiology working for a public hospital in Hong Kong and also a member of the pro-democracy concern group Medical Inspire, wrote on Facebook that he did not know the "medical experts and doctors" Carrie Lam was referring to. Wong said he would not call himself an expert but at least he and his colleagues have all been professional trained and are all licensed doctors. He doubted the qualifications of the medical practitioners hired by the government from China.

'Holocaust Victim' Trend on #TikTok

Role-playing Holocaust victims has been trending on the Chinese video-sharing app TikTok. The video function allows people to show fake bruises and wear a striped inmate outfit or one of the armbands marked with the Star of David Jews were ordered to wear under Nazi Germany.

The Auschwitz museum that was built on a death camp in Poland described this behavior as "hurtful and offensive" and are "dangerously close or already beyond the border of trivialization of history".

In reality, the Holocaust marked the Nazi’s genocide of 6 million European Jews, with approximately one million people killed at the Auschwitz camp between 1940 and 1945 including more than 100,000 non-Jews.

Victim of 7.21 Yuen Long Mob Attacks Persists in Seeking Justice Despite the Threat of Arrest

Mr So, a chef in Hong Kong, has wounds all over his back resulting from the attack by white-clad mobs at “Kai Tei” in Yuen Long on 21 July 2019. He opened a thread in LIHKG, an internet forum, on the morning of August 26, 2020, with a heading of “just in case I am arrested. Let me create a post here first”. This came after the police had arrested pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, who had been investigating the mob attacks on that day.

In the post, Mr So wrote that he felt shocked, confused and angry about the arrest of Lam, but expected more people to be arrested. He believed that he also had to be ready that he might be arrested one day. Mr. So emphasised he would continue striving for justice and truth through legal procedures, “It’s up to them if they want to arrest me. It’s easy to find a stick to beat a dog.”

Mr. So was off from work on 21 July, 2019 when he was beaten by 20 people after leaving a shopping mall. “I was not capable and had no chance to hit back,” he said.

He was not worried and did not regret to speak openly, “I won’t commit suicide and do not have any mental illness.” He won’t abandon his right striving for the rights to justice and truth of “a group of victims and all Hongkongers”.

While responding to an inquiry of the Stand News, Mr So expressed that he felt ridiculous towards the arrest of the pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting by the police. “A plaintiff becomes the defendant and Department of Justice (DoJ) withdraws prosecution, so I think I might be the next target. That’s why to sign a note for investigation by opening a forum in LIHKG.”

Proposed laws empower Payne to block deals involving foreign nations

The Australian Federal Government is moving to introduce sweeping new laws which would give it the power to block deals involving foreign nations.

Under the Foreign Relations bill, Australia's Foreign Minister can terminate any existing agreements, such as Victoria's controversial Belt and Road deal with China, if they are considered adverse to Australia's foreign relations or are inconsistent with foreign policy.

UN Refugee Agency in Hong Kong Refuses to Accept Petition Letter from Local Church in Support of Belarus

After the Belarusian presidential election on August 9, Lukashenko, the five-term president, was 'elected' again, which immediately triggered demonstrations against his rigged election win and police violence. The protests in Belarus found resonance in Hong Kong.

Reverend Roy Chan of Hong Kong's Good Neighbour Northern District Church petitioned to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office, handing in 800 signatures calling for the UN's attention to the political oppression in Belarus.

The petition letter requested the Belarusian government to release all protesters, withdraw prosecutions, and immediately run a fair presidential election. The petition also asked the EU and the UN to step up their intervention to ensure the re-election of the president.

Reverend Chan expressed grave dissatisfaction and regret that the UN refugee agency did not accept his petition letter. Chan pointed out that what is happening in Belarusian are not new to Hong Kong people. He called on the public to keep a close eye to the issue and to continue resisting against violence and oppression.
