Police harassed RTHK off-duty reporter and called him “thug reporter” in Kwun Tong

Dozens of masked protesters gathered at APM shopping mall in Kwun Tong last night, shouting slogans.

At around 10 pm, about 80 riot police entered and shoppers started heckling at them. Many of these shoppers were stopped and searched by police, and at least 4 were detained.

RTHK reporters recorded police pushing forward with shields, calling reporters “thug reporters” and asking, “Do you really think there’s a fourth estate?”

An off-duty RTHK reporter, not wearing a reflective vest but carrying a media badge that was already shown to police repeatedly, passed through the scene to cover the ongoing situation. An officer pointed a camera at this reporter and began filming at close proximity, as riot police was taking a man away. Another officer told the reporter that a media badge was not a “presidential card”, called him a “thug reporter” and said reporters cannot save anyone this time, provoking laughter from the other officers.

While being searched by the police, one woman questioned their actions, to which the police responded with coarse language. Upset by the situation, some onlookers argued with the officers, who then raised their pepper spray cans at them as a warning, and pushed at the onlookers with their shields.

One man was pulled behind the police cordon to be searched. When he resisted, an officer pushed him onto a glass panel and started taunting, “Yes you’re the most righteous!” The man was later released.

Some sections of the mall were were closed off by riot police. A man and a woman, both in their middle ages, asked for permission to enter a cordoned off area, but were met with insults of “middle-aged cockroaches” and “cowards” from the riot police.

Police Escort Pro-Police Supporter to Safety After Head-butting Reporter

2150 | Telford Plaza, #KowloonBay
At around 9pm on Christmas Day, as police were conducting a stop-and-search, a man in orange shouted, “Support the Hong Kong Police!” and attacked bystanders. Two people who tried to stop his attacks were instead arrested by the police.

The video clearly shows the man head-butting a reporter’s face and camera. A young man who was trying to pull the assailant in orange away was subdued by the police instead.

Afterwards, the assailant was escorted away to safety by the police, with the officer’s arm around the man’s shoulder.

HKPUSU PressCom issued a statement condemning any behaviour infringing press freedom. They also suspected the police of allowing the obstruction of reporters' work. Further, they charged that the police, by repeatedly intimidating reporters with pepper spray, have become an accomplice in the erosion of press freedom in Hong Kong.

Police Brutality during Christmas: Hong Kong Watch Condemns, HKSAR Government Refutes

Hong Kong Watch, a UK-based group monitoring the threats to Hong Kong’s basic freedoms and the rule of law, issued a statement strongly condemning the overly-aggressive law enforcement tactics witnessed on Christmas Eve.

The group had called for an independent inquiry into police brutality and an immediate policy response from the international community to introduce “targeted Magnitsky sanctions against those responsible in Hong Kong and China for severe human rights violations, including officials in the government and the police.”

The HKSAR government had responded to the condemnation with a full rebuttal claiming the police “had adopted a measured and restrained approach” in response to “blatant unlawful activities of the violent protestors on Christmas Eve.” They believe that Police enforcement actions were necessary as public safety was at risk. They described allegations by Hong Kong Watch’s chairman as “fake, utterly irresponsible and grossly unfair.”

Teenager Exclaims Wish of Not Wanting to Be "Disappeared"; Police Expresses "Helplessness" Over "False News" and Rumours "Brainwashing" the Public

In the clash between the Police and civilians on Christmas Day, a 16-year-old teenager fell from the roof of the restaurant JIEGENGE in Mong Kok. After his jump, the youngster said that he did not want to "be forced to disappear". Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Kwok Ka-chuen stated on the police press conference, that "some citizens has been brainwashed by the enormous amount of fake news on the web. This group of people started to have irrational panic and hallucinations of being sent to some unknown location after being arrested or being murdered after arrest. Those are all ridiculous thoughts."

Kwok stressed that the police force "act by the law". He also pointed out that most arrestees did not receive unfair treatment, "After having experienced custody and investigation by the police, they thought that police officers had been professional throughout the process. No arrestees were beaten. Neither did they receive any unjust treatment, nor were they transported to a faraway place.”

Meanwhile, the officer who displayed the ID card of a reporter in front of the camera was still on duty.
