#Poll: One out of four #Hongkonger wants to emigrate; #CarrieLam: Not interested
On March 25, 2022, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) announced some alarming survey findings that a quarter of the city population plans to emigrate, citing political uncertainty as the key reason.
Reporters took this issue to the #ChiefExecutive, Carrie Lam and asked whether measures are in place to retain talents.
Lam brushed the question aside as she responded in contempt, "I am not interested in these surveys in general. So I am not going to comment."
Lam asked Hong Kong people to stay confident as she foresees the #COVID19 pandemic receding in 4 weeks.
Lam's colleague, a member of the Executive Council, Bernard Charnwut Chan, apparently has a different view.
Chan expressed concerns over Hong Kong's role as the financial center in Asia when multinational corporations are moving their Asia Pacific headquarters away from Hong Kong.
Chan told reporters on a radio talk show that chances for these headquarters to be relocated back to Hong Kong are slim.
Although Hong Kong has lifted flight bans against 9 countries, inbound restrictions remained in force while many countries have removed COVID-19 restrictions altogether.

Satisfaction with Hong Kong’s press freedom slumps to record low: Survey
On April 1, 2022, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) published the results of a telephone survey involving 1,004 respondents’ “appraisal of news media.”
Findings revealed record low results since 1997 - only 28% of respondents are satisfied with #PressFreedom in Hong Kong.
The survey also reported a record-high proportion of respondents saying that local news outlets did not utilise their freedom of speech, the highest rate since September 1997.
The overall satisfaction with media outlets’ performance also dropped from 8% (2021) to 2% (2022), a record low since records began in September 1997.
Chris Yeung, former chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalist Association said that the closure of media outlets was “definitely” a factor contributing to people’s dissatisfaction with press freedom.

Senior member of Hong Kong pollster leaves city for the UK, citing ‘red lines’
A senior member of Hong Kong’s leading independent pollster, #ChungKim-wah has left for the UK, calling the city a place where one may “no longer live normally and without intimidation.”
In his lengthy statement on Facebook, Chung said he had not initially considered emigrating.
“Now, I can only hope that the skies will be broader, the air fresher… and that I don’t have to think about whether the red lines that move arbitrarily will one day target me,” deputy CEO of the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) Chung wrote.
He added that he did not want his friends and loved ones – especially his elderly parents – to worry about him. “I am apologetic that I left without saying goodbye, and I regret that I couldn’t say farewell to you all,” Chung said.

Scholars see arrests of Humanitatian Fund trustees as an attempt to silence dissidents and vengeance against international criticism
Dr. Chung Kim-Wah, former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) said it was widely rumored that President Xi Jinping may attend the 25th handover ceremony in Hong Kong on July 1.
In Chung's view, the National Security Police's high-profile arrests of 5 trustees of 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund was a deliberate attempt to "clean out" dissidents in the city.
The Fund provided legal and financial assistance to more than 2,200 people prosecuted for their part in the 2019 pro-democracy protests.
"Although it remains uncertain whether Xi Jing-ping would be in Hong Kong," Chung elaborated, "the period before July 1, say May and June would be sensitive times when National Security Department may take organised efforts to silence dissidents in Hong Kong."
Dr. Wong Wai-kwok, former Deputy Professor of Politics and International Relationships of the Hong Kong Baptist University, considered the arrest a "vengeance" for international criticism over the Chief Executive election in Hong Kong.
Following the small-circle CE election in early May, G7 foreign ministers issued a joint statement to express their grave concern over the steady erosion of political and civil rights and Hong Kong’s autonomy, calling it Chief Executive "Selection" instead of "Election".
