Pro-democracy Independent Bookshop closes down due to Political Oppression

Located in San Po Kong, Hong Kong has an independent bookshop, Bleak House Books, which has closed down on October 15.

Many supporters and customers went there to bid farewell and take photographs. Some put down words of encouragement on wish cards for the owner, Albert, who decided to return to the US.

Although most of the bookshelves have been left empty, many customers lingered on in the shop till the very last moment.

Finally, Albert switched off the light and walked out of the shop. He closed the door and put up a placard on the door that writes “Hong Kong is my home”.

When talking about the current situation in Hong Kong, Albert felt “being suffocated” every day.

He said, “the politics in the US is a mess too. But they are barely possible to arrest all democrats. At least there are some spaces left … I am not sure how risky it has become, but I felt being muffled and could hardly breathe every day.”

HK Lennon Walls recreated through frames of photographs

During the pro-democracy anti-Extradition Bill Movement in Hong Kong in 2019, HKers in many districts spontaneously built #LennonWalls to voice their democratic wishes.

Two years have gone by, the Lennon Walls have been destroyed and washed away.

A Hong Kong photographer, Harvey, recreated the Lennon Wall by collating frames of panoramic photographs.

Harvey called it “Assembly”. His work won a third place in a "Professional Event, Social Cause" of the #IPA International Photography Awards this year.

The 27-year-old photographer Harvey told the press that he was happy to win the prize.

Humbly, he said the works belong to Hong Kong people. He added, "these two years have been tough for Hongkongers". He is hoping that people still remember the cause of the movement, and still remember to support each other and #AddOil.”

‘It Was Like Having the Chinese Government in the Room With Us’

U.S. authorities provided satellite photos of a North Korean ship transferring coal to a Chinese-flagged vessel to the U.N. panel of experts for North. China responded that it was “completely normal” for Chinese coast guard vessels to patrol in the region and asked the panel “not to include in its report unverified information” about the Chinese ship. Also, they stated it was a matter of national security.

It also underscores the contradiction between Beijing’s attempt to assert itself as a
champion of multilateralism while it persistently seeks to air brush out the record of its
failure to live up to those commitments. The United States has expressed increasing concern about China’s failure to enforce sanctions.

Douglas Todd: 5 reasons to question Vancouver's label as the 'anti-Asian hate crime capital of North America'

Some international media outlets this year labelled Vancouver “the anti-Asian hate crime capital of North America.”

They focused on a Vancouver police report that showed hate incidents against East Asians (not “Asians,” as the articles misstate) jumping by a startling 717 per cent in the year that COVID hit, up to 98 from 12.

Bloomberg,The Guardian and other media outlets then rushed to compare the Vancouver hate-crime unit’s data to figures from some large Canadian and U.S. cities and concluded that there had been more incidents in this relatively small West Coast city.
