Pro-democracy Hong Kong students in UK harassed by Chinese students

Hong Kong students studying abroad have recently shared their experiences of being harassed when organizing events in school campuses in the UK in support of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

Jamie and Kitty are among the Hong Kong students who suffer mobbing. Chinese students called them “cockroaches” and “traitors” in Mandarin.

Kitty said the organizers of Hong Kong-related events, including herself, were all doxxed. Their personal information was posted on China social media groups and they were tagged as “Hong Kong Independence Supporters” and “Cockroaches”.

Their application for holding the event was also held up by the school campus multiple times. The event was finally approved with the restriction that it has to be a silent event. “

It made me realize that our campus could no longer serve as a place for us to speak for the current situation in Hong Kong”, said Kitty. She accused the school of “fearing the loss of revenue by the tuition fees of Chinese students”.

Moreover, students revealed that the #CCP used the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in the United Kingdom (#CSSAUK), as a tool to penetrate school campuses in the UK in which Chinese students are bribed into voting the CCP appointed persons to become committees of the Association.

According to the CSSAUK website, it is an association that is “supported by the Education Section of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the UK”. It also claimed to be the largest Chinese association in the UK.

According to the documents released by the Education Bureau, among the 8 UFC-funded universities, 6 made new heights in the admission of Chinese students in the 2020/21 Academic Year.

Particularly in #LingnanUniversity, #BaptistUniversity and #EducationUniversity, the
student composition is greatly imbalanced, with Chinese students making up 80% of all non-local students.

The University Grants Committee (#UGC) claimed that international undergraduate admission has taken a hit owing to the pandemic, thwarting the plans of overseas talents to study in Hong Kong.

China-backed Confucius Institutes face closure under veto laws

Australian universities face having their controversial Confucius Institutes shut down within months, with the University of Sydney among the first to submit contracts for scrutiny under the Commonwealth’s foreign veto scheme.

At least one centre - RMIT University’s Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute - will close this year, with the university saying it would cease operations due to budget pressures caused by COVID-19.

The institutes, which are hosted by 13 Australian universities in partnership with Chinese universities, have come under scrutiny from the federal government amid concerns they function as a plank of the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda effort.

Facebook Staff Fret Over China’s Ads Portraying Happy Muslims in Xinjiang

Facebook Inc. is blocked in China, but Beijing is a big user of the platform to spread its political views to hundreds of millions of people overseas, sometimes via advertisements.

Now, some Facebook staff are raising concerns on internal message boards and in other employee discussions that the company is being used as a conduit for state propaganda, highlighting sponsored posts from Chinese organizations that purport to show Muslim ethnic minority Uyghurs thriving in China’s Xinjiang region, according to people familiar with the matter.

The U.S. and some European governments say Beijing is committing genocide against the Uyghurs, citing a campaign that includes political indoctrination, mass internment and forced sterilizations.

China indefinitely suspends Strategic Economic Dialogue, accuse Australia's “Cold War mindset” for disrupting normal exchanges

China National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) issued a statement on Thursday (5 May), saying that it has decided to suspend the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue indefinitely due to Australian government's measures to disrupt the normal exchanges and cooperation out of “Cold War mindset and ideological discrimination”. This is the first diplomatic mechanism that has been formally frozen since the relationship between the two countries deteriorated.

The relation between China and Australia continues to be tense, Australia has been criticizing China on human rights issues in Hong Kong and Xinjiang for many times. Last month the Australian Federal Government cancelled the “Belt and Road” agreements between Victoria state government and China. ABC quoted the analysis saying that it caused China's discontent.

“Some Australian Commonwealth government officials launched a series of measures to disrupt the normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia out of Cold War mindset and ideological discrimination”, said NDRC in a statement. It declared that the decision is “based on the current attitude of the Australian Commonwealth Government toward China-Australia cooperation”, and decides to indefinitely suspend all activities under the framework of the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue.

CSIS first alerted Ottawa to national-security concerns of two scientists at top disease laboratory

Canada’s spy agency urged the removal of security clearances for two scientists who were later dismissed from the country’s top infectious-disease laboratory because of national-security concerns relating to their work with China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, according to two sources.

In January of this year, Xiangguo Qiu, who headed the Vaccine Development and Antiviral Therapies Section, and her biologist husband, Keding Cheng, were fired from their positions with the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg.

Britain grants asylum to Hong Kong democracy activist Nathan Law

Hong Kong democracy activist Nathan Law said he has been granted political asylum in Britain, where he arrived last July after Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law on his home city that has been heavily criticised by the West.

The move is certain to ratchet up tensions between London and Beijing as Britain opens its doors to potentially more than five million residents of Hong Kong in the wake of the contentious security legislation.

“After several interviews in four months, the Home Office has informed me that my asylum application is approved,” Law said on Twitter late on Wednesday.

10 veteran pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong plead guilty over 'National Mourning Day' Protest in 2019; 'Long Hair' Appears in Court with Short Hair

In Hong Kong court on May 17, 2021, ten heavy-weight pro-democracy activists pleaded guilty to "organising an unauthorised protest" on October 1, 2019.

They are former legislators 'long hair' #LeungKwokHung, #AlbertHo, #LeeCheukYan, #YeungSum, #CydHo and #SinChungKai; #AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai; and activists #FigoChan, #AveryNg and #RichardTsoi. That day marked the 'National Mourning Day' protest on the establishment day of the PRC during the Anti-ELAB movement

Among the defendants, convenor of the Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) Figo Chan, 'long hair' Leung Kwok-hung, Albert Ho, and Lee Cheuk-yan also pleaded guilty to "inciting" others on September 30, 2019 to take part in the protest.

When '#LongHair' Leung Kwok-hung appeared in court on May 17, 2021, his signature long hair has been cut short. Leung is currently serving his sentence in Stanley Prison for organizing and participating in an 'unauthorized' assembly on August 18, 2019.

The last time he was seen in short hair was in 2014 when serving a 4-week sentence after being convicted of 'causing chaos' in the Legislative Council in 2011. Then, Leung was forced to cut away his long hair due to the appearance policy of the correctional services.

Leung later filed a legal review, pointing out that it is discriminatory when female inmates are allowed to keep long hair while male inmates are not. In November 2020, the Court of Final Appeal approved Leung's review.

Nevertheless, on February 1, 2021, the Department of Correctional Services implemented a new policy where inmates, regardless of their gender, cannot keep their hair beyond their shoulder's length.

HK Court Denies Bail for 36 in
#47Activists Case, Assigned Judge: "Five Demands" Endander #NationalSecurity

Among the 47 pro-democracy activists facing allegations of “conspiracy to commit subversion” in connection with a legislative primary election in Hong Kong in 2020, 36 of them have been denied bail.

'#LongHair' Leung Kwok-hung and Jimmy Sham Tsz-kit, who are the vice-chairmen of the League of Social Democrats, were among the 36 who were denied bail.

Both of them applied for bail at Hong Kong's High Court earlier, but Judge Esther Toh Lye-ping , the designated judge of the #NationalSecurityLaw, refused to grant them bail and ordered to hold them back in custody.

The senior counsel Hectar Pun representing Leung and Sham pointed out that they have never advocated "Hong Kong independence", colluded with foreign forces or requested sanctions against the Chinese and Hong Kong governments, nor did they sign the "No Regrets" online statement.

Pun also said that Leung's local ties are strong, he has recently gotten married and is suffering from coronary heart disease, so the risk of absconding is low.

Moreover, Sham has always been active in the local #LGBT community, he married his partner who is also a Hong Kong resident in 2013, so Sham has no interest in leaving Hong Kong.

The judge issued her reasons on May 13, 2021, claiming there was no good reason to believe the two would not continue to act against national security.

The judge cited that the Department of Justice's arguments against bail, saying that Sham still stated he would continue to fight for the "#FiveDemands", in front of the police station upon his arrival on Feb 28, 2021. This indicated that there was no reason to believe he would not continue to endanger national security.
