Civilians Encourage and Stand in Solidarity With Arrestees

2042 | #CausewayBay
A long queue of black-clad civilians, who were arrested by riot police earlier, were transported to police station and detention centre by a coach. Other bystanders kept shouting, reminding the arrestees to look at the camera and shout out their names. It has, unfortunately, become a routine as numerous cases of "suicide" occurred last year.

They also encouraged the arrestees to "Hang in there" in order to show solidarity. Meanwhile, heavy-handed deployment of riot police could be seen.

New Sponge Grenades Contain Chemicals Found in Tear Gas

The Police Tactical Unit (PTU) fired sponge grenades at protesters earlier on at Times Square in Causeway Bay.

Afterwards, a new model of sponge grenades, as seen on the expended cartridge, with the model number "NT-901/CS" was left on the ground.

This particular ammunition was found to have been made in Brazil. The bullet had also been discovered to be fired from a 40mm grenade launcher, the exact same launcher they use to deploy teargas canisters. The new round in the arsenal was found to be loaded with the chemical, 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile, commonly referred to as CS gas, or more commonly known as teargas.

Hongkongers Take it to the Street Under the National Security Law

July 1 marks 23 years since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 1997. There are still 27 years to reach the limit of the promise of no change for 50 years; however, Beijing had passed the National Security Law and the Hong Kong government had it gazetted on June 30, 2020 in just one day.

The law took effect before the public was informed of the terms and details. On July 1, many mourned the death of the "one country two systems" while the pro-Beijing camp looked forward to the "positive impacts" of the law.

Despite that the police had objected the organization of the annual July 1 march, Hongkongers still took it to the street, bringing with them different props, chanting slogans of their demands demands and holding the pro-democracy hand sign.

Young Man in Possession of Stickers Arrested Under the National Security Law

The National Security Law in Hong Kong took effect at 11 pm on June 30, 2020. On the first day, police arrested at least ten people for this new law.

Outside Ma On Shan Police Station, one of the families Mrs Y said her son only had a sticker that read "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our times" on his phone and a few more stickers in his bag. The police, after sighting the said material in his bag, suspected his son of "subverting the state power". Mrs. Y said, " I can't accept this. This is a big joke on Earth."

Under the National Security Law, the subversion of state power is subject to a sentence of three years to life imprisonment. Mrs. Y feels it is ridiculous if her son would be sent to jail because of some stickers.

Article 38 of the National Security Law extends Beijing’s jurisdiction to the entire world

Speaking of the Hong Kong national security law, Chen Ming-tong noted that article 38, which extends the law to cover offences outside Hong Kong by those other than its permanent residents, essentially provides for universal jurisdiction.

In addition, given the provisions of article 29, an American will find himself in breach of the law should they criticize Beijing, thereby inciting 'hatred' from Hong Kong citizens towards the regime and may result in ‘serious consequences’, even if they do so in the US.

‘I wonder if this is some fiat of a celestial empire by which all of humanity is bound. This is no longer just something that should concern Hong Kong or, indeed, Taiwan. The world must come wide awake to this law, a law we really should be confronting in all seriousness,’ said Chen.

#Chickeeduck Suffers Political Suppression

Herbert Chow, the owner of the chain children's clothing store Chickeeduck, had placed the Hong Kong Goddess of Democracy at the Discovery Park branch in Tsuen Wan earlier. It was ordered to be removed by the New World Development, the mall owner, but he refused.

Chow received an email notification from the owner today that his contract will not be renewed and will have to move out within 21 days. He described the situation as abrupt, "I am feeling the political pressure of real estate developers," and rebuked New World Development, "The 1% have compromised", and hope to let the public see the true colors with this incident, "they're just like the government. "

Chickeeduck has set up shop in Discovery Park since July 25, 2017. Yesterday, the mall sent a letter to Chow that the lease will be annulled on June 30 and asked Chickeeduck to move out within 21 days; the letter also did not mention the reasons for refusing a renewal.
