Chinese-controlled Media: Beijing to Bypass Hong Kong's Legislature and Push National Security Law

According to Chinese-controlled news media South China Morning Post, Singtao Daily, OnCC and HK01, the PRC's Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) members in Beijing were notified to attend a briefing session in the evening of May 21. Xia Baolong, Chinese Communist Party member and director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, is expected to be present.

Some delegates foresee that Beijing will address Hong Kong’s national security issues at the two sessions ("lianghui"), including appending national security legislation into Annex III of the Basic Law for the so-called purpose to curb "foreign interference and terrorism".

Sources said Beijing will invoke Article 18 of Hong Kong's Basic Law and directly annex the anti-subversion law into the city's constitution have earlier announced their similar proposals to Beijing.

According to Apple Daily, foreign consulates from US, UK, Canada, Japan and Australia and the European Union office in Hong Kong have yet to receive any similar news.

Shops were forced to wind their shutters due to the heavy police presence.

It is often known that 7-9PM is the peak hour for shopping malls, as most people would have knocked off from work, or finished having dinner.

This has been occuring for all the 'Sing with You' activities that have been held so much, and it is definitely detrimental to the business who are trying to pick themselves up after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ousted pro-democracy lawmaker wins legal challenge, Pro-Beijing lawmakers may appeal

Ousted pro-democracy lawmaker Lau Siu-lai won her legal challenge over the disqualification of her candidiacy in the 2018 LegCo West Kowloon By-election.

Lau was removed from her office after Beijing interpreted the Hong Kong Basic Law and the court in Hong Kong retroactively ruled her seat invalid for not having taken her oath of office "solemnly". Lau tried to enter the by-election to take back her seat, but was barred by the Election Affairs Committee.

With the current ruling, pro-Beijing Yan Chan, who took over Lau's seat, is now ousted. However, Chan can still apply for an appeal before June 10.

Police Infringes Civilians' Privacy: Ordering Them to Unlock Their Phones and Making unwarranted accusations of Telegram Users

Civilians gathered in the Yoho Mall atrium today to commemorate the 10th mensiversary of the Yuen Long 721 attack. When riot police went to disperse the crowds, they had demanded twelve civilians, who did not know each other, to unlock their phones and show to the police whether they had installed the app Telegram or followed channels related to the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests after surrounding and forcing them into the police cordon.

Those found to have Telegram on their phone or followed said channels were fined HK$2000 by the police under the pretense of violating the gathering ban; those with their phones "clean" were let go without charges.
