A heart-to-heart talk with a schoolteacher

3pm, October 4, the anti-mask law was enacted.

As if we were facing a formidable enemy, the last lesson was cancelled and all were summoned to school hall.

Earnestly and seriously, the principal groaned and said, “I hope to see everyone safe and sound next Tuesday”.

“Dismissed”.

The students left. There was a wave of sadness in the staff room. Many teachers cried, including myself. I walked to my class when I was crying, I wanted to meet my students and say a nice goodbye.
One of my closest students pulled me to a corner and asked: “What are we going to do with this?”

“About… What?” I asked.

“In any terms.” he replied.

I broke down again during our conversation, I couldn’t stop no matter how hard I tried. Many students came by to console me. What did I say and why did I cry?

Some of the students cried too. The more tears they shed, the more dangerous they are going to be. In fact, we all know that. It is a trap set by the government. In the coming three days, they would arrest, torture or even kill as many as they can. The government planned to create a big scene at this critical point of time by playing the “End Game”, to end YOUR GAME. The students were in this mood of “End Game” as well, but their end game is the End Game of “all-or-nothing” and this is exactly what the government wants.

Please stay calm.

It has already happened in the recent protests. Firing live rounds, torturing protesters in San Uk Ling Holding Centre, charging protesters with rioting, all these pointed out a simple fact: the lives of protesters were taken cheaply ever since a long time ago.

The anti-mask law makes no difference. It is just a tool to provoke.

The government came up with such a tactic just because they are now more ready than ever to hunt their prey, the protesters.

Edward Leung Tin-kei, an activist and a former spokesperson for the Hong Kong Indigenous stated:
In Ukraine, there was a revolution after the enactment of anti-mask law. If the same thing were to be done in Hong Kong, a revolution is inevitable as well. These words etched onto the protestors’ hearts. To them, enacting the law seems to a whistle blown to signify the start of a revolution. However, with a different culture, background and an essentially different demographic, it is not surely guaranteed that a revolution would begin in Hong Kong after the anti-mask law is enacted. What Edward truly meant in his words is that if such law is ever enacted, we should all prepare ourselves for a revolution to deal with the situation.

Facing the provocation from the government, the students yelled, “Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times”. Their loud agitated screams is exactly what the government wants to hear; their swan-song.

What was the greatest mistake the revolutionaries in Les Miserables ever made?

Wrong decision due to wrong timing.

“Listen everybody!

General Lamarque is dead!

Lamarque! His death is the hour of fate.

The people's man.

His death is the sign we await!”

The misjudgment of timing was the fatal mistake that led them to die alone without any support or assistance. That was Les Miserables. Our Hong Kong, on the other hand, is not as miserable as that world yet. Although we are communist-phobic, the revolution has not yet arrived as lots of concerns remain.
Until now, there has not been any severe sabotage like large-scale arson. Should we willingly believe that there is going to be a revolution?

Whenever the youngsters yell “Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times”, I get worried for the few staunch believers who may sacrifice themselves, unnecessarily. Their passion and devotion are praiseworthy and they should be protected, but the government is taking advantage of them to set a trap, a trap that is ultimately targeting the young ones. This is an extremely shameless tactic.
