Carrie Lam claims the government does not agree on establishing an independent commission of inquiry

Chief Executive Carrie Lam attended a meeting initiated by the public yesterday (Aug 26th). The participants were mainly young adults and they all raised the five demands at the meeting while Lam explained the stance of the government.

Lam clarified that rejecting the idea of establishing an independent commission of inquiry was not due to opposition from the police force, stating that the Independent Police Complaints Council had already been engaged in looking into the saga and thus the government held that it was not suitable to set up an independent commission of inquiry.

Chinese Global Spy Recruitment :How China Uses LinkedIn to Recruit Spies Abroad

Foreign agents are exploiting social media to try to recruit assets, with LinkedIn as a prime hunting ground, Western counterintelligence officials say. Intelligence agencies in the United States, Britain, Germany and France have issued warnings about foreign agents approaching thousands of users on the site. Chinese spies are the most active, officials say.

Those who have recived such messages from headhunters include One former senior foreign policy official in the Obama administration, a former Danish Foreign Ministry official, a former Obama White House official and career diplomat, with offers to fly him to China and connect him with ā€œwell paidā€ opportunities, or said that they could help the former officials gain ā€œgreat access to the Chinese systemā€ for research.

ā€œInstead of dispatching spies to the U.S. to recruit a single target, itā€™s more efficient to sit behind a computer in China and send out friend requests to thousands of targets using fake profiles.ā€

The use of social media by Chinese government operatives for what American officials and executives call nefarious purposes has drawn heightened scrutiny in recent weeks. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube said they deleted accounts that had spread disinformation about the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. Twitter alone said it removed nearly 1,000 accounts.

LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, is both another vehicle for potential disinformation and, more important, an ideal one for espionage recruitment, American officials say.
LinkedIn is also the only major American social media platform not blocked in China because the company has agreed to censor posts containing delicate material.

Chinese agents often make offers over various channels, including LinkedIn, to bring the prospective recruit to China, sometimes through the guise of a corporate recruiting firm offering to pay them for speaking or consulting engagements or aid in research. From there, agents develop the relationship.

ā€œThe Chinese want to build these options with political, academic and business elites,ā€. ā€œA lot of this thrives in the gray zone or the spectrum between influence-seeking and interference or classical espionage.ā€ People who have just left government are especially vulnerable because they are often looking for new employment

[8.28 Anti-ELAB #Metoo Rally]

The Anti-ELAB #Metoo Rally was held at Chater Garden by the Hong Kong Womenā€™s Coalition on Equal Opportunities. The theme of the rally was ā€œSolidarity Against Hong Kong Policeā€™s Use of Sexual Violence - Defending the Dignity of Hong Kongers.ā€ The rally condemned Hong Kongā€™s policeā€™s insulting and unequal treatment of women and even men during arrests and body-searches, in the name of enforcing the law.

A sea of black filled the MTR Station. Citizens offered materials that the organizer suggested including purple ribbons and purple cellophanes and lipstick painting of the words #protesttoo to attendees.

Many attended the rally. Around 9pm, the organizer announced that the crowd of attendees has filled all lanes of Chater Road and Des Voeux Road West. Many attendees waved torches on their phones and some waved laser pens.

"I donā€™t think I did anything wrong" says girl whose underwear came off and was possibly exposed during her arrest when numerous police officers carried her away previously at the Tin Shui Wai protest. She appeared at the Chater Garden #metoo rally tonight, and spoke to the crowd with a mask and sunglasses on to safeguard her identity. The girl says she did not view herself as the victim or the weak, and that this experience will not hinder her from participating future protests ā€œsince that is what the police wanted to achieve from thisā€.

Foreigner forced to sing Chinese National Anthem after showing support for HK at Bar in Guang Zhou

A foreigner was surrounded by a group of Chinese after showing support for Hong Kong at a local bar in Guang Zhou. The victim had been confronted, beaten, and eventually forced to drink alcohol before learning to sing the Chinese National Anthem.

A video widespread on Weibo shows at least three men cursed and beated up the foreigner, but it did not reveal how the conflict was started. The netizen who uploaded the video says that after the police arrived, they claimed the result was "peaceful and harmonious".

The post was overwhelmed by comments saying the victim deserved to be beaten for supporting Hong Kong on China territory, "watching it happen is a pleasure to me," "the best example for nationalist education, can you convince him without using your fist?", "its wrong to hit others, but its right to beat this foreigner to death!" A few disagreed, "Loving your country by violence? I can't laugh at that."
