CCP Uses Health Code as a Surveillance Tool - Dissidents Query

Epidemic prevention has given the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) an easy excuse to impose #HealthCode in Chinese cities.

In recent days, the health codes of a number of social activists in China have been switched to red or experienced unusual app errors for no apparent reasons. They question whether the Health code has become a tool for CCP to tighten their fist over dissidents, curbing their freedom to travel and move around cities.

#XiYan, one of the civil rights lawyers involved in the 709 crackdowns, wanted to visit the mother of Zhang Zhan, a citizen journalist and a former lawyer in Shanghai.

Ignoring local police's disapproval, Xi went ahead with his plan, only to find that his health code switched to red.

Xi shared a photograph of himself in the airport and his health code in red on social media.

#WangYu, another human rights lawyer, posted on Twitter on November 7 that she was strained in Tianjin as she failed to update her health code on her way back to Beijing.

Wang's husband, #BaoLongJun who is also a human rights lawyer, also could not generate a health code on his phone on his way from Suzhou back to Beijing.

Official #Beijing 2022 Olympics #MobileApp Is Marred by Security Flaws, Researchers Say

//In a report released Tuesday, Citizen Lab also said the app didnā€™t properly encrypt sensitive metadata transmitted through the appā€™s messaging function, which meant any eavesdropper operating a Wi-Fi hot spot could discover who users are communicating with and when.

The Beijing 2022 handbook for athletes and officials says My 2022 is intended to ensure the safety of all Games participants and ā€œis in accordance with international standards and Chinese law.ā€//

Security scanners across Europe tied to China govt, military

//At some of the worldā€™s most sensitive spots, authorities have installed security screening devices made by a single Chinese company with deep ties to Chinaā€™s military and the highest levels of the ruling Communist Party.

The World Economic Forum in Davos. Europeā€™s largest ports. Airports from Amsterdam to Athens. NATOā€™s borders with Russia. All depend on equipment manufactured by Nuctech, which has quickly become the worldā€™s leading company, by revenue, for cargo and vehicle scanners.

Nuctechā€™s critics allege the Chinese government has effectively subsidized the company so it can undercut competitors and give Beijing potential sway over critical infrastructure in the West as China seeks to establish itself as a global technology superpower.

ā€œThe data being processed by these devices is very sensitive. Itā€™s personal data, military data, cargo data. It might be trade secrets at stake. You want to make sure itā€™s in right hands,ā€ said Bart Groothuis, director of cybersecurity at the Dutch Ministry of Defense before becoming a member of the European Parliament. ā€œYouā€™re dependent on a foreign actor which is a geopolitical adversary and strategic rival.ā€//

HK Authorities Propose Real Name Registration and #HealthCode System like China's

Hong Kong's Secretary for Heath #LoChungMau said on July 11, 2022 that the government had plans to introduce a three-colour ā€˜health codeā€™ system in the city, bringing the app in line with China's system.

It would be an additional function to #LeaveHomeSafe, the government's COVID contact-tracing app. Lo mentioned that reference was sought from the health code systems used China. He also claimed that it was important to implement real name registration.

[Editor's note: Since the LeaveHomeSafe app has been made compulsory by the authorities in Hong Kong, many citizens expressed concerns over its privacy issues. The health code system in China has been long regarded as a #MassSurveillance campaign of the #ChineseCommunistParty government.]

#China uses #coronavirus warning app to stifle #dissent

//China's #COVID19 warning app enables health authorities to move quickly against a virus outbreak. But it seems officials also use the app to stop perfectly healthy people from doing what Beijing doesn't want them to do. And the target is dissidents.//

#Report: Security concerns over compulsory app launched by Hong Kong government

This is part of a report published by #TechOpenFund on July 27, 2022. The investigation was conducted by #7ASecurity and #OTFRedTeamLab in 2022:

//...This exercise involved both a privacy audit and a security audit of the #LeaveHomeSafe #Android and #iOS apps.

The privacy audit could not conclusively prove malicious intent or unauthorized tracking of Hong Kong citizens. However, the security audit demonstrated that these applications have not been professionally audited by any competent security firm before, and that significant flaws exist in the current software security development lifecycle.

This is particularly concerning given that the app was originally introduced more than a year and a half ago, was made mandatory in some fashion for 9 months and recently began requesting real name registration and tracking userā€™s movements.

While no clear privacy violation could be conclusively proven during the audit at runtime, a number of application artifacts, likely inherited from underlying dependencies or simply security vulnerabilities introduced by mistake, were found during this exercise.//

#TikTok Browser Can Track Usersā€™ Keystrokes, According to New Research

// The web browser used within the TikTok app can track every keystroke made by its users, according to new research that is surfacing as the Chinese-owned video app grapples with U.S. lawmakersā€™ concerns over its data practices.

The research from Felix Krause, a privacy researcher and former Google engineer, did not show how TikTok used the capability, which is embedded within the in-app browser that pops up when someone clicks an outside link. But Mr. Krause said the development was concerning because it showed TikTok had built in functionality to track usersā€™ online habits if it chose to do so.

Collecting information on what people type on their phones while visiting outside websites, which can reveal credit card numbers and passwords, is often a feature of malware and other hacking tools. While major technology companies might use such trackers as they test new software, it is not common for them to release a major commercial app with the feature, whether or not it is enabled, researchers said. //
